Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- The Phoenix Suns' leading scorers finally got going in the third quarter. Shawn Marion scored 22 points and Joe Johnson added 20 and seven assists as the Suns snapped a three-game losing streak with an 89-85 victory over the Hawks. Marion and Johnson combined to make 7-of-10 shots in the third quarter, when Phoenix used an 18-2 run spanning seven minutes to take control. "We came out with energy in the third, (we tried) to come out and do everything we could do," Marion said. "That was great momentum for us." After making just 1-of-8 shots and scoring four points in the first half, Marion was unstoppable in the third quarter. He scored 11 in the period and Phoenix shot 65 percent while outscoring Atlanta, 30-17. The Suns trailed, 42-36, at the break but set the tone for the second half right from the tip. "I thought the thrid quarter was probably the best we played in a long time," Phoenix coach Mike D'Antoni said. "The guys just picked it up, doubled hard and played well." The Hawks regained the lead early in the final period but could not stop Marion, Johnson and Howard Eisley, who scored all seven of his points in the last 3:15 to seal the win. Eisley's 3-pointer gave the Suns an 82-77 lead with 1:45 to play. Phoenix made its free throws down the stretch, with Casey Jacobsen going 2-of-2 from the line with seven seconds left for the final margin. "You go out and try to make plays when they present themselves," Eisley said. Atlanta committed 23 turnovers that led to 26 points for Phoenix. Many of the miscues spawned easy baskets as the Suns had a 22-6 advantage in fast-break points. Hawks center Theo Ratliff fouled Johnson hard across the top of his head in the second quarter on a drive to the hoop. Johnson needed several stitches, then found his shot. "We were agressive," Johnson said. "We were turning the ball over and making plays on the other end. We put ourselves in a hole but dug ourselves up." Stephen Jackson led the Hawks with 19 points and Ratliff added a season-high 16 with 13 rebounds and four blocks. Atlanta remained the NBA's only team that has not posted consecutive wins this season. "We let a good opportunity get away from us tonight," Atlanta coach Terry Stotts said. "Going into the game, we were concerned about our ballhandling and their ability to create turnovers, and that came back to bite us. They got dunks in transition off our mistakes. That's why they made their run in the third quarter." The Hawks fall to 4-15 against teams with losing records. Atlanta guard Jason Terry took a forearm to the ribs from Howard Eisley with 8 1/2 minutes left in the fourth quarter. X-rays were negative and he returned minutes later. Suns forward Amare Stoudemire sat out his fifth consecutive game with soreness in his left ankle and big toe.
