Game Story

MEMPHIS, Tennessee (Ticker) -- Bonzi Wells had a solid performance against his former Portland Trail Blazers teammates. Not many others on the Memphis Grizzlies did. Wells scored 20 points but got little support from Pau Gasol and his other teammates as the Grizzlies' franchise-record eight-game winning streak came to an end with a 88-76 setback to the Trail Blazers. Gasol was limited to 13 points on 4-of-15 shooting, scoring only five points after the break. James Posey added 10 points but was the only other player in double figures for the Grizzlies, who shot 32 percent (26-of-81). "The winning streak is something that only lasts a period of time," Gasol said. "Losing tonight gives us a bit of attention. We have to work every night if we want good things to keep happening to us." "It hurts bad to lose like this because we were doing well," Posey said. "We just have to stay focused and take it one game at a time. We have to execute on both ends, make shots and get stops." Zach Randolph scored 21 points to lead the Trail Blazers, who won their third straight road game to improve to just 5-16 away from the Rose Garden. Randolph sat out the last five minutes of the third quarter with four fouls and did not play in the final period as Portland took control. The game was tied, 64-64, before Qyntel Woods made a layup with 10:39 remaining to give Portland the lead for good and start a 16-2 run. Rasheed Wallace, who had 16 points and 10 rebounds, contributed seven points during the burst. "We didn't let them go on any runs," Portland coach Maurice Cheeks said. "I think that was the key. We didn't let them back into the game." Memphis, which acquired Wells from Portland for Wesley Person and a 2004 first-round pick on December 3, got no closer than 10 points thereafter as it slipped to 4-1 on its six-game homestand. "It's just one game, it's just a loss," Wells said. "Streaks are made to be broken and ours got broken today. The good thing about it is we have a game (vs. Utah) on Friday. That's going to be our focus." In a poor-shooting first half by both teams, Portland held an 18-14 advantage after one quarter and 40-34 at the break. "We had a lot of opportunities in the first half but we either missed the shot or turned it over," said Grizzlies coach Hubie Brown, whose team connected at just 31 percent in the first half (13-of-42). "We had key people struggle tonight. We couldn't throw the ball in the ocean." Trail Blazers guard Damon Stoudamire, who had 10 points, said they were not motivated specifically to snap the Grizzlies' record streak. "We didn't rally talk about their win streak," Stoudamire said. "We want to get a win streak of our own. We want to win eight straight."
