Game Story

ORLANDO, Florida (Ticker) -- Jason Kidd, Lucious Harris and the New Jersey Nets appear comfortable playing for Lawrence Frank. Kidd collected 33 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists and Harris scored all of his 12 points in the fourth quarter as the Nets defeated the Orlando Magic, 89-79, to improve to 2-0 under their new coach. Frank was named coach on Monday after the Nets fired Byron Scott, who had led them to back-to-back NBA Finals. Kidd and other players reportedly disagreed with some of Scott's strategies. "Jason Kidd played like an MVP and Lucious Harris gave us huge production," Frank said. "It was a great team effort." Kenyon Martin added 18 points and nine rebounds before fouling out for New Jersey, which limited the Magic to 39 percent shooting (28-of-71) en route to its third straight victory following a season-high five-game losing streak. "We didn't shoot the ball well tonight and I thought that was one of the major reasons that we weren't able to pull this one out," Magic coach Johnny Davis said. "I thought we competed, we just weren't able to make shots. And down the stretch, we let Lucious Harris get loose for eight straight points, and that hurt us also." Tracy McGrady scored 22 points on 6-of-20 shooting to pace Orlando, which trailed, 67-59, entering the fourth quarter and got no closer than seven points thereafter. McGrady struggled against Harris, who forced him into double-teams. "They just collapsed on me," McGrady said. "That's all that he was really doing, being a presence, being up in me, being a freaking pest and just getting on my nerves the whole night, making me do things that I really didn't want to do." "I thought they did a good job in double-teaming him and we didn't move the ball as well as we should have and as well as we had been previously against the double-team," Davis added. Harris opened the final quarter with a jumper and made five more baskets in the period, the last giving New Jersey an 81-68 cushion with 5:04 to play. "After the first shot went in, coach kept calling the plays for me," Harris said. "He had plenty of confidence in me by running those plays. The guys laid some big picks, I got open and made some shots." "He was hot," Kidd said. "Until he said he couldn't shoot anymore, we were going to go to him. He caught fire. He got some great looks and K-Mart got him open, and Lucious did what he does best and that is shoot the ball. We rode him for five or six minutes." Behind 10 points from McGrady, Orlando held a 22-19 advantage after one quarter, but Kidd scored 14 in the second period to help New Jersey to a 43-39 halftime edge. The Nets scored an impressive 30 points off 19 turnovers by the Magic and limited Orlando to five points off nine giveaways. New Jersey scored 25 fast-break points. "We usually take better care of the basketball than that," Davis said. "I don't know if fatigue is a factor or their good defense or maybe a combination. But anytime you turn the ball over (19) times against the Nets, that means they are running at you on every possession."
