Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- The Milwaukee Bucks clearly are a different team on the road. The Bucks never recovered from an awful start and suffered a 93-83 setback to the Atlanta Hawks, who got 21 points from Shareef Abdur-Rahim and an early spark from Jason Terry. "We just pulled a usual Milwaukee Bucks on the road," swingman Desmond Mason said. "When teams jump out on us and we fight our way back into the game, and we get close, but just come up short. So we won't be using that excuse anymore." The surprising Bucks are 19-5 at home, the best mark in the Eastern Conference. But they are just 7-15 on the road, and this contest began a stretch of 10 of 17 away from home. Having lost six of its previous eight road games, Milwaukee had an opportunity against Atlanta. The Bucks won here earlier this season, and the Hawks had dropped their last three games at cavernous Philips Arena. That chance quickly disappeared as the Hawks raced to an 18-4 lead. Terry scored 10 of his 19 points in the first quarter, which ended with Atlanta holding a 26-13 advantage. "We just didn't have any energy to start the game, and that's disappointing," Bucks coach Terry Porter said. "We just didn't have any life about us, and they jumped on us early. They still remembered the last time we were in this building and we beat them." Milwaukee trailed by 21 points late in the first half, when it shot just 23 percent (7-of-30) from the field and was outscored in the paint, 30-6. "We got off to a good start in the first half," Hawks coach Terry Stotts said. "Our transition was really good. They missed a lot of shots in the first half and we rebounded, ran, and built a lead." One of the better shooting teams in the NBA, the Bucks still trailed, 72-55, entering the fourth quarter before defensive-minded reserves Mason, Dan Gadzuric and Marcus Haislip put together a 13-0 run. But Milwaukee got no closer. Abdur-Rahim added 12 rebounds for Atlanta, which never trailed, shooting 45.5 percent (35-of-77) and holding a 47-39 edge on the boards. "You always like to see a boxscore where the other team never had a lead," Stotts said. Michael Redd scored 21 points for the Bucks, one more than the other four starters combined. Eighth in the league in shooting, Milwaukee shot less than 37 percent (28-of-76). Haislip's dunk made it 72-68 with 7:56 to go, but rookie Boris Diaw answered with a jumper that beat the shot clock. The Bucks got within four points on four other occasions, but the Hawks responded each time, including a short banker by Diaw that made it 80-74 with 4:59 left. "That's a shot I have to shoot, because there was one second left on the shot clock," Diaw said. "I had no way to make the extra pass, so I took the shot. I still have to play with more confidence and be more aggressive. Teams know I like to pass the ball, so I have to be more aggressive shooting." "Boris was really good down the stretch," Stotts said. "He hit a big jump shot that really stemmed the tide." Abdur-Rahim and Terry combined to make 6-of-6 free throws down the stretch as Atlanta stopped a two-game slide. "We still have to recognize why teams are coming back at us," said Hawks center Theo Ratliff, who scored 12 points. "I know if we don't do that, other teams are recognizing that and they're gonna do it from the beginning of the game."
