Game Story

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- If LeBron James is drawing comparisons to a young Michael Jordan, he does not seem to mind. He might even be encouraging it. James scored 19 of his season-high 38 points in the third quarter as the Cavaliers surpassed their win total of last season with a 104-100 victory over the Washington Wizards. The teenage rookie phenom scored 14 points in the first quarter, then did even better in the third period to help the Cavaliers erase a five-point halftime deficit. Cleveland outscored Washington, 36-17, in the third quarter, which was capped by a long 3-pointer by James with three seconds left. "I wear (No.) 23 for a reason, so I guess that's what he felt like when he used to heat up," said James, noting Jordan's number. James, who added six rebounds, four assists and two blocks, had the first of back-to-back three-point plays to give the Cavaliers lead for good at 52-50 with 8:02 left in the third quarter. "Needless to say he was ready," Cavaliers coach Paul Silas said. "He has got that in him, but he did other things than just score. He defended and blocked shots. He did it all." Carlos Boozer added 21 points and 14 rebounds for the Cavaliers (18-29), who won on the road for just the fifth time in 25 games this season. Cleveland has won four of its last five games. "LeBron James carried the load at the offensive end for them," Washington coach Eddie Jordan said. "He is one heck of a player. That's what this league is made of, star players carrying their team." Jarvis Hayes scored 20 points and fellow rookie Steve Blake added 15 for the Wizards, who used a late run to make the score respectable. The Cavaliers led, 98-84, with 1:50 remaining. James scored his final point on a free throw with 9:06 left, but he was whistled for three fouls in the final period and picked up a technical. At one point, he even threw his headband into the stands. "I wouldn't say I was frustrated (not reaching 40)," James said. "I think I've gained some respect in this league. There were a couple of calls that I thought maybe could have gone the other way." The heroics by James spoiled the return of Washington swingman Jerry Stackhouse, who had not played all season after undergoing knee surgery in October. Stackhouse was activated prior to the game and had 13 points on 5-of-14 shooting. "It felt good to get back on the court," Stackhouse said. "It has been a long time and my muscle memory usually kicks in. It was just unfortunate that we couldn't get a win." It was a frustrating afternoon for Wizards forward Kwame Brown, who broke his nose in an accident during warmups. Brown missed the first half and scored six points in 21 minutes. The Wizards scored the first 15 points of the second quarter to take a 33-24 lead. Hayes had seven points in the spurt, which he capped with a 3-pointer.
