Game Story

DENVER (Ticker) -- Carmelo Anthony celebrated his latest honor with yet another outstanding effort. Named Rookie of the Month for the third straight time earlier Monday, Anthony scored a career-high 39 points as the Denver Nuggets rolled to a 116-97 triumph over the Portland Trail Blazers. Anthony made 14-of-22 shots as Denver recorded its third straight win and second in a row over Portland. While the Nuggets have won just 13 of the last 61 meetings with the Trail Blazers, they are 6-1 at home in the series over the past four seasons. Anthony also avenged one of his poorer efforts of the season, after scoring only eight points on 3-of-9 shooting in the first meeting January 2. His previous career high was 37 points against the Houston Rockets on December 26. "He's really making great progress in terms of his overall game," Nuggets coach Jeff Bzdelik said. "He's running the court really well and defensively he's doing some things that are good in terms of weakside help and awareness. ... He's doing some great things for us outside of just scoring." "I'm just trying to avoid the rookie wall," Anthony said. "That's all and try to get more wins." Anthony made 10-of-14 free throws and just missed becoming the first rookie this season to score 40. "I felt good tonight and my jumper was falling early, and I was able to take advantage of what the defense was giving me," Anthony added. "I had 39 and was saying to myself, 'Why not 40?' But, I missed a couple free throws that would have given me 40. But, like I said, we won the game and I'm happy." Nene added 20 points, seven assists, six rebounds and six steals as Denver continued to put it all together offensively. The Nuggets, who shot 53 percent (40-of-75) from the field, have averaged 113 points in the last three contests. "We have six new faces on our basketball team and it takes time for a team to come together," Bzdelik said. "Coming into this game I think we were fifth in scoring, ninth in field-goal percentage. Those are all very good things." Zach Randolph had 28 and 11 rebounds for Portland, which had its season-high four-game winning streak snapped. "I think it was all about effort," Randolph said. "In the first half we were down by two but I think we just gave up. It is all about fighting. They were getting a lot of fast-break points. It was a game of energy and at times we were there, especially where we outrebounded them." "Our energy level was not high from top to bottom," Trail Blazers coach Maurice Cheeks said. "We had turnover after turnover and that is how Denver plays. Turnovers created a lot of easy baskets for them." Anthony had 16 points in the first quarter and 10 in a 20-8 spurt that turned an 8-6 lead into a 14-point bulge. The rookie had 24 at the half but Denver led just 59-57 after 24 minutes. "Carmelo Anthony was great," Cheeks said. "He had a career-high 39 points and a highlight 39 points. He was better than anybody that guarded him. They beat us in aspect." "Carmelo is a good player," Randolph said. "He shoots well and is good at driving. he has a good body and is a good player." Portland pulled into a tie, 59-59, in the opening minute of the third quarter but the Nuggets went on a 13-5 burst to seize control. "That was a solid win for us," Bzdelik said. "We really defended well in the second half holding them to just 31 percent shooting in the second half." The Trail Blazers missed 13 of 35 free throws and committed 24 turnovers that led to 33 points.
