Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- On a night where he dominated on the offensive end, Shareef Abdur-Rahim won the game for the Atlanta Hawks with his defense. Abdur-Rahim had 32 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Hawks to their first win in nine meetings over the Minnesota Timberwolves, 97-89. Atlanta's last victory over Minnesota came on December 14, 1999. "We beat one of the best two or three teams in the NBA playing against the best player in the NBA right now (in Kevin Garnett)," Abdur-Rahim said. "It was a total team effort. We kept digging away and in the fourth quarter, we had an opportunity to win the game and we did." With the Hawks clinging to a 92-89 lead with 1:28 to play, Abdur-Rahim swatted the ball away from Garnett as he rounded into shooting position. Rookie Boris Diaw picked up the loose ball and converted two free throws. "He kind of put the ball on me, and I was able to swing at it," Abdur-Rahim said. After Gary Trent missed a jumper, Jason Terry hit a 3-pointer to seal the victory. Terry scored 10 of his 24 points in the fourth quarter. "I wanted it," Terry said. "The fourth quarter has been rough for me and my team. I just wanted it." Oddly, 12 of Atlanta's 16 wins have come against teams with records of .500 or better. Minnesota had won three straight games. "I don't know why we are better against teams with a winning record," Atlanta forward Stephen Jackson said. "A win is a win. I don't care if it is over Georgia Tech." Sam Cassell led the Timberwolves with 20 points and seven assists. Fellow All-Star Garnett had 17 and 12 rebounds but made just 7-of-24 shots. "I didn't hit a (darned) shot," said Garnett. "I played like (garbage) tonight. Those are usually the shots that I take, I usually nail them, I just didn't hit tonight." Minnesota led by seven with 6:58 to play, but a bad pass from Cassell was intercepted by Nazr Mohammed and Terry hit a 3-pointer at the other end to spark a 21-6 run to end the game. "This is something unusual for out ballclub, to have another tema play harder than us," said Cassell. "That's all they did. They deserved to win." The Wolves were playing on consecutive nights for the 12th time this season. They are 7-5 in the second game of back-to-backs. "No matter how tired you are, when we get in that situation, that's our bread and butter, our ability to execute down the stretch and we didn't do that," Minnesota coach Flip Saunders said. Hawks guard Jacque Vaughn left the game with 10:20 remaining in the second quarter and did not return after coming down hard on his left ankle following a jump shot. X-rays were negative and his status is uncertain. Minnesota guard Troy Hudson missed his fourth straight game with a sprained right ankle. He did not travel with the team to Atlanta.
