Game StoryNEW ORLEANS (Ticker) -- The good news for the reeling New Orleans Hornets was that they were not blown out at home for a third straight game. The bad news was they still could not find a way to topple Dirk Nowitzki, Michael Finley and the Dallas Mavericks. Nowitzki contributed 28 points and 11 rebounds and Finley added 22 points as the Mavericks beat the Hornets for a ninth straight meeting, 113-104. Steve Nash collected 18 points and 12 assists and Antawn Jamison chipped in 17 points for Dallas, which has won 11 of its last 13 games overall. The Mavericks have not lost to the Hornets since a setback at Charlotte on November 17, 1999. The Hornets, who lost their fourth straight game, had dropped the opening two contests of their four-game homestand by a combined 45 points to Miami and New Jersey. Despite missing injured All-Star point guard Baron Davis, they trailed by just 94-91 before Jamison made a layup with 4:22 remaining. Nash, who had just one turnover, scored on a runner after a block by Nowitzki. After Jamal Mashburn made a free throw, Finley connected on a banked 3-pointer as the shot clock expired to make it 101-92 with 2:44 left. "Actually, I thought I had more time before I got the ball," Finley said. "I looked up and saw three on the shot clock, so I just prepared myself to shoot a long shot." "It was big, but Fins has been making big shots for us all year," said Nowitzki, whose squad had been 2-5 on the road against Eastern Conference teams. "That was a little lucky, but you have to have a little luck to win on the road." Dallas shot 9-of-13 from the field and 13-of-15 from the line in the fourth quarter, making all 12 attempts from the stripe in the final 84 seconds. "We pretty much got our shot off every time (in the fourth quarter), and we did a nice job defensively and rebounding the ball," said Nowitzki, whose team held a 43-36 advantage on the glass. "When we rebound the ball well, we give ourselves a good chance to win the game." Filling in for Davis, Darrell Armstrong contributed 27 points and 11 assists and first-time All-Star Jamaal Magloire had 23 and 12 rebounds for the Hornets, who also were without starting guard David Wesley. Dallas' bench held a 37-13 scoring edge. "They gave a great effort and made it very difficult for us to win this game, but nonetheless we did win," Dallas coach Don Nelson said. "It's too bad they have a couple of injuries. We don't take it for granted with this team because they are a great basketball team, and when they get healthy they will be as good as any team in the East." Dallas took the lead for good, 60-57, on a 3-pointer by Finley with 8:15 left in the third quarter and opened an 81-74 cushion entering the fourth quarter. "We played better basketball tonight, we shot the ball well and got the stops," Armstrong said. "Right now what we are struggling with is the third quarter - at some point in the third quarter we run out of gas."
