Game Story

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- James Posey and Earl Watson accelerated the tempo and the Washington Wizards could not keep pace. Posey scored 11 of his season-high 31 points in the fourth quarter and teamed with Watson to fuel a huge run as the Memphis Grizzlies raced past the Wizards, 103-101. The Grizzlies erased a 13-point fourth-quarter deficit with a 24-2 run at the outset of the period, then got big baskets from Pau Gasol down the stretch to hold on for their 10th victory in 13 games. The Wizards used a 13-0 run to open an 84-71 lead entering the fourth quarter. But with the 5-11 Watson pushing the tempo and Posey draining a trio of 3-pointers, the Grizzlies stormed to a 95-86 lead. "Once we started getting stops and hitting buckets, it was like extra energy," Posey said. "The guys were saying, 'Come on, let's get more stops. We get more stops and we get out on the break.' Earl did a great job of pushing the ball." "Posey got hot and made some big shots," Watson said. "We got easy baskets in transition. We kept them to one shot, and before you knew it, we tied the game. That takes the heart out of the other team and lifts our spirits up. That takes us to a whole other level mentally and emotionally, and that's what we needed. " Washington, which missed its first 10 shots of the period, pulled into a 97-97 tie on two free throws by Brendan Haywood with 1:25 to go. But Gasol made a turnaround bank shot and, after Posey broke up a pass to force a shot-clock violation, sank a jumper for a 101-97 lead with 26 seconds remaining. "We go 24-2 and go up nine, and the next thing you know, it's tied," Brown said. "We go up, we go down. If you can figure it out, write me a note, will you? So I won't get an ulcer." Gasol scored 18 points and Watson handed out 11 assists for the Grizzlies, who won in Washington for just the second time in franchise history and swept the season series. The Wizards lost for the fourth time in five games. Guard Gilbert Arenas, who has missed 26 games this season due to a strained stomach muscle, made his return but scored just nine points on 3-of-15 shooting and had trouble staying with Watson. "I can sit out four more weeks and come back and get injured. Who knows?" said Arenas, who has been sidelined three times by the injury. "I'm just going to keep going. I feel good right now, so I might as well play." Posey made consecutive 3-pointers to cut the deficit to 84-81 before consecutive fast-break baskets by Lorenzen Wright, Bo Outlaw and Watson gave the Grizzlies an 87-84 lead. "That's how we play," Brown said. "We run that hard and we kick out. When we ran that 24-2 run, it was because of the defense, but more important - they only got one shot and it was kicking long, so we had so many 4-on-2s and 3-on-2s." Jerry Stackhouse made two free throws, but Shane Battier and Posey made 3-pointers before Wright followed in a miss on the fast break, making it 95-86 with 5:50 to go. "That's our style - up-tempo," said Posey, who made 5-of-6 3-pointers. "But we need to take better care of the basketball. We want to get out on the break and get high-percentage shots in transition." Bonzi Wells scored 12 points and Mike Miller added 11 before leaving with a back strain for Memphis, which swept the season series for just the second time in franchise history. Larry Hughes scored 27 points and Jerry Stackhouse added 19 for Washington, which fell to 2-4 on a seven-game homestand.
