Game Story

HOUSTON (Ticker) -- Maurice Taylor scored all 19 of his points in the second half as the Houston Rockets snapped a four-game losing streak with a 103-89 triumph over the Milwaukee Bucks. One of the top bench players in the NBA this season, Taylor logged just three foul-plagued minutes in the opening half. But the 6-9 forward had possibly his best half of the season, making 8-of-13 shots in the second half as the Rockets pulled away. "He obviously had a tough first half," Houston coach Jeff Van Gundy said. "He found open seams in the second half and did a great job converting. Guys did a great job finding him and I thought he had a very productive second half." "Usually when I come in during the first half, I am looking to be aggressive, but I was in foul trouble, so I just (tried to remain aggressive)," Taylor said. Taylor was 5-of-7 from the field in the fourth quarter, helping keep the Bucks at bay. "Taylor really hurt us coming off the bench," Milwaukee coach Terry Porter said. "Those baskets he made really hurt us." "He hit a lot of big shots from the wing, from the foul line," Milwaukee center Brian Skinner said. "He stretched our defense. He was tough to match up." With Houston leading, 63-58, late in the third quarter, Taylor scored four points to highlight a 12-4 spurt that closed the period. Cuttino Mobley sparked the burst with a 3-pointer. "(In) the third quarter, we couldn't make any shots," Porter said. "We had some good looks. We had some stretches where we could have moved the ball better, made the extra pass." All-Star Steve Francis scored 23 points and Mobley 19 as the Rockets ended their longest losing streak of the season and bounced back from a 20-point loss to Phoenix. Francis sat out that game, serving a team suspension for missing a flight. "I thought today I helped my teammates get better, as far as getting everyone the ball and organizing the team," Francis said. "We needed a victory. Despite what happens between me and coach, everybody felt that we needed to pull together." Houston got a bit of a boost from the return of Adrian Griffin, who had missed the team's first 47 games of the season following right knee surgery. Griffin had two points, three rebounds and three steals in 17 minutes. "That was exactly what I'm looking for," Van Gundy said. "Tough, defense-oriented, three steals, deflections, tough rebounding, good stuff." Skinner scored 17 points and Joe Smith chipped in 13 and 15 rebounds for Milwaukee, which has dropped four straight road games. Houston shot 50 percent (18-of-36) from the field in the first half and held Milwaukee to 38.5 percent (15-of-39) but led just 50-47 after 24 minutes. Mobley's 3-pointer made it 66-58 with 4:05 to go in the third quarter. Taylor had two free throws and a reverse layup in the spurt, which Clarence Weatherspoon capped with a turnaround jumper that put the Rockets ahead 75-62. Houston made just nine shots in the period but held Milwaukee to 6-of-25 shooting. The Bucks got no closer in the final quarter and trailed by as many as 16 in the final seconds. Milwaukee's starting backcourt of rookie T.J. Ford and All-Star Michael Redd combined to make just 3-of-17 shots.
