Game Story

BOSTON (Ticker) -- Stephen Jackson and the Atlanta Hawks withstood a furious second-half rally to win consecutive games for the first time this season. Jackson scored 23 points and Theo Ratliff made a pair of key blocks to help the Hawks to a 100-96 triumph over the Boston Celtics, who have lost a season-high six straight games. The Hawks were the last team in the NBA to win two straight games. "I'm happy because we finally won two in a row," Jackson said. "The reason we were able to win this game was because Theo came up big for us tonight. We got broken down and a lot of their guards were rolling and Theo just clogged the paint up and made them take a lot of tough shots." Jackson's fourth 3-pointer with 55 seconds remaining gave Atlanta a 97-92 lead, but Paul Pierce hit four free throws to pull Boston within 97-96 with 20 seconds remaining. Jackson made 1-of-2 free throws eight seconds later, giving Boston a chance to tie or win. But Ricky Davis was rejected on two layup attempts by Theo Ratliff, and Dion Glover made two free throws with four seconds left to close the scoring. "I knew they were going to attack the basket," Ratliff said. "I was expecting Paul to have the ball, but once Ricky came open, I knew I had to defend the basket. I just tried to go up with two hands and try to block his view. He laid the ball right out there for me." "I thought it was a great play," Pierce said. "He went to the basket hard and I thought he got fouled, twice. But that's how the game goes. With a few seconds left on the clock, the refs are going to let the players decide the game." Shareef Abdur-Rahim scored 22 points and Glover added 16 for Atlanta, which had not won consecutive games since April 12-14, 2003. Ratliff finished with 10 points, nine rebounds and seven blocked shots. "That's my major job in the middle," Ratliff said. "If I can get to it and make them think about me and they're not trying to think about making that shot and they're trying to get the ball over me, it causes teams to miss a lot of shots. That's the job that I have in that middle." Pierce scored 28 points and Mike James added 14 for the Celtics, who are 0-5 under interim coach John Carroll. Boston has not won since a 100-89 home triumph over Washington on January 23. Atlanta led, 64-48, with 9:17 remaining in the third period. But Boston responded with a 17-2 run to pull within 66-65 with 3:47 to go. "This is going to sound strange, but I'm proud of how our guys played," Carroll said. "I know we've lost quite a few games in a row, but I'm just really impressed with the way they came back in the game." Boston's slide could not have come at a worse time. The Celtics begin a season-high seven-game road trip Saturday. The Hawks got off to a good start in this one, closing the first half with a 16-0 run to build a 58-43 halftime advantage. But they literally threw away their big lead, committing eight of their 29 turnovers in the third quarter.
