Game StoryNEW ORLEANS (Ticker) -- The boxscore may show that Jamal Mashburn was having a poor shooting game. Don't tell that to the Detroit Pistons. Mashburn scored 12 of his 22 points in the fourth quarter as the New Orleans Hornets ended a four-game losing streak with a 92-81 victory over the Pistons. Playing his sixth game of the season, Mashburn made just 4-of-17 shots through three quarters while New Orleans took a 72-58 advantage But he heated up down the stretch and made two key baskets to stop rallies by Detroit. "I just go out there and play basketball," Mashburn said. "I don't worry. My shots will fall. That's been proven throughout my career." "Tonight was a must win from a lot of standpoints. It could have been against the Bulls or whatever. It didn't matter. We just needed a win." Mashburn's first clutch basket was a 3-pointer from the right wing that stopped a 10-0 surge and gave New Orleans a 75-66 lead with 10:20 remaining His second big basket was a short jumper with just under four minutes left that increased the lead to 85-74. Although he made just 7-of-24 shots, Mashburn continued to present problems for the Pistons. He averaged 23 points vs. Detroit last season and hit decisive baskets in both of the Hornets' wins. While Mashburn's big fourth quarter helped the Hornets end their second four-game skid of the season, so did the defensive efforts of Baron Davis and Stacey Augmon. The duo shut down Detroit guards Richard Hamilton and Chauncey Billups, limiting them to 13 points on 4-of-16 shooting. "They played good, period," Billups said. "They crashed us on the boards. Rip (Hamilton) only shot six shots and when he only shoots six shots our chances diminish because he is our No. 1 scoring threat. But they did a good job and we never got into a rhythm." "I don't think you'll see a better job of Hamilton than what Stacey Augmon did tonight," New Orleans coach Tim Floyd said. "I just thought he was terrific." Davis, who had missed the previous three games with a sprained left ankle, scored 11 of his 13 points in the first half. He rolled his ankle when Billups stepped on it in the third period and may not play Saturday in Milwaukee. "I twisted my ankle again," Davis said. "I probably should have taken the night off and rested it even more, but I felt that I needed to give a spark to my team." The Pistons fell for the fifth time in nine games, losing control of the game with a poor third quarter. They scored just 14 points and committed eight of their 13 turnovers.
