Game Story

MIAMI (Ticker) -- Stephon Marbury played like an ideal floor leader. The Miami Heat played as if they had no direction. After scoring all 16 of his points in the first half, Marbury handed out seven of his eight assists in the second half as the New York Knicks rolled to their fourth straight win, a 76-64 victory over the cold-shooting Heat. Kurt Thomas especially benefited from the double-teams that Heat coach Stan Van Gundy threw at Marbury in the second half, making all seven of his shots after missing all four in the first half. "When Stephon penetrates, we know he'll find us if we're open and that's what he did in the second half," said Thomas, who played the first two seasons of his nine-year career with the Heat. "I couldn't hit a shot in the first half but I got open looks in the second." The win was the 1,300th of Lenny Wilkens' career. The NBA's all-time winningest and losingest coach has a career record of 1,300-1,117, including an 8-3 mark since taking over the Knicks. One of Wilkens' losses was an 85-77 defeat to the Heat in New York on January 24. In that contest, Van Gundy succeeded in holding Marbury to four points on 2-of-11 shooting. This time, Van Gundy did not double-team Marbury, and the star point guard scored 16 points on 5-of-9 shooting as the Knicks built a 43-36 halftime lead. In the second half, Van Gundy changed his strategy, and Marbury adjusted, taking just one shot and leaving it to his teammates to produce. Most of his assists came on pick-and-rolls with Thomas, who made four open jumpers off passes from Marbury and scored 10 points in the third quarter. "Stephon early in the game was going crazy," Van Gundy said. "Our choice was on pick-and-rolls to trap Stephon and make him give the ball up. Sometimes we got to Kurt quick enough, sometimes we didn't. He did a great job making shots." "Stephon is starting to take over and run the show," Wilkens said. "The key today is he adjusted to what the defense was doing. Kurt had a hot hand and Stephon kept getting him the ball." The Heat, who played without rookie guard Dwyane Wade (left foot sprain) for the second straight game, shot a season-low 30.5 percent from the field, including just 1-of-15 3-pointers. They matched a season low in points, including a meager 10 in the fourth quarter. "Missing got contagious for us today," said Miami guard Eddie Jones, who was 4-of-16 from the field. "We missed a lot of open looks today. Sometimes you have a game where nobody can score. Today, we had one of those days." Lamar Odom led the Heat with 18 points and 14 rebounds but made just 6-of-19 shots. After a dunk by Odom pulled the Heat within 67-61 with 6:36 left, they went scoreless for nearly five minuts as the Knicks ran off nine straight points.
