Game Story

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- It may be his All-Star status or his new coach, but Kenyon Martin seems like a different player. Martin scored 19 of his 28 points in the second half and Jason Kidd recorded his seventh triple-double of the season as the New Jersey Nets extended their season-high winning streak to eight games with a 99-87 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers. The Nets underwent a surprising coaching change on January 26, replacing Byron Scott with Lawrence Frank, and Martin was named an All-Star for the first time on Tuesday. Whatever the reason, he has stepped up his game, averaging 22.8 points and 11.8 rebounds in his last five contests. Martin scored 12 points in the third quarter and added six more as New Jersey opened the final period on a 9-0 run. Martin had two dunks and a pair of free throw during the spurt, which gave the Nets an 86-73 cushion with 8:43 to go. "(The Nets) went a certain way and then they pushed the ball right back at you, stayed aggressive and looked at the rim," Philadelphia coach Randy Ayers said. "Jason (Kidd) does a great job of putting the ball on the rim for his front line. They know how to finish games." The 76ers struggled in the fourth quarter, scoring only 14 points on 3-of-17 shooting. They finished at less than 39 percent (30-of-76) from the floor. "The really good teams in this league, the key is they are able to raise their level on the defensive end, and once again our guys showed their grit and character," Frank said "The fourth-quarter defensive effort was tremendous." "We're proud on defense, not by just me, but as a team," said Martin, one of the best defenders in the NBA. "If we can do that, it's a great thing. If we can go out and defend the way we did in the fourth quarter, we are not going to lose too many of these games." Martin made 5-of-10 shots in the second half and finished at 9-of-19 from the floor and 11-of-12 from the line. He is shooting 55 percent and has made 30-of-34 free throws since Frank took over. Kidd collected 14 points, a season-high 13 rebounds and 10 assists for his 57th career triple-double as New Jersey remained unbeaten in seven games under Frank. "I wanted to force our tempo and make it more a track meet," Kidd said. "We just wanted to get control of the game and that's the way we get control, by dictating the pace." Richard Jefferson scored 14 points, Kerry Kittles added 12 and Aaron Williams and Rodney Rogers had 11 apiece for the Nets, who shot under 40 percent but made 35-of-43 free throws on their home floor. New Jersey also held a 49-38 rebounding advantage, despite playing without center Jason Collins, who sat out with a sprained toe. Allen Iverson had 27 points, despite 6-of-21 shooting, and eight assists and for the Sixers, who lost for the 11th time in their last 14 games. Glenn Robinson managed only nine points on 3-of-15 shooting. "We just stopped making shots," Iverson said. "We really couldn't get in a rhythm. I struggled all game from the beginning. When you have both of us playing bad like that it's hard for us to get a win." Samuel Dalembert, who played collegiately at the Meadowlands with Seton Hall, collected 16 points, 13 rebounds and six blocks.
