Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- The Atlanta Hawks continue to be a hard team to read. Stephen Jackson scored a career-high 30 points and rookie Boris Diaw established a personal best with 10 as the Hawks posted a 102-96 triumph over the Dallas Mavericks. The win ran Atlanta's home record against teams from the Midwest Division, where all seven teams have at least 25 wins, to 4-0. The Hawks, who are 18-35 overall, also are 13-18 this season against teams with a winning record. "We can't make up our record against teams under .500," Atlanta coach Terry Stotts said. "I prefer to look at it as we're 8-7 (in our last 15). (We are) 8-7 with some really quality wins. I'd rather look at that than the negative." Against a team it had not beaten in nine games - a stretch dating back more than six years - the Hawks made all the clutch shots in the second half. Atlanta used a 10-0 run bridging the third and fourth quarters to take a 77-72 lead just under one minute into the final period and led by as many as 10 down the stretch. The win came in the the Hawks' final game before the All-Star break and hours before the team pulled off a blockbuster trade with the Portland Trail Blazers. The Hawks sent former All-Stars Shareef Abdur-Rahim and Theo Ratliff and guard Dan Dickau to Portland for Rasheed Wallace and Wesley Person. Abdur-Rahim had 27 points in the game and has at least 20 in six straight contests. Michael Finley led Dallas with 24 points and Dirk Nowitzki had 23 and 10 rebounds. Nowitzki was 10-of-20 from the field but the rest of the Mavericks combined to make just 40 percent (30-of-75) of their shots. Dallas also was a woeful 5-of-26 from 3-point range. "I don't have a whole lot to tell you, we just got our (tails) beat in about every facet of the game," Mavericks coach Don Nelson said. "It's a disappointing loss, but these things happen. I never thought that we were really in it mentally, like we needed to be." The Mavericks led 72-67 with 41 seconds left in the third quarter but Ratliff dunked to ignite the game's pivotal run. Jackson followed with two three-point plays around a basket by Dion Glover to give the Hawks a 77-72 edge with 11:06 remaining. Dallas never got closer than three the rest of the way. "We came out and threw the first punch in the fourth quarter and then just kept swinging at them," Atlanta guard Jason Terry said. "That's what you have to do against a team like Dallas. They're not known for their defense, so offensively you know you're going to get good looks. We were the aggressor in the fourth." "We let this game get away from us," said Dallas forward Antoine Walker, who had 14 points and 12 rebounds. "We had control of the game going into the fourth, but they came out more aggressive than us in the fourth and it hurt us." Jackson was 10-of-18 from the field and eclipsed his previous season high of 25, set against Denver on January 3. "I knew I had to play well to get a win," said Jackson, a Texas native. "I just want to come out and be a factor. It's easy to score on Dallas. They're a great team, but they're not a great defensive team." "He's a good player, but we made him look like an All-Star," Nowitzki said.
