Game Story

HOUSTON (Ticker) -- Manu Ginobili rose to every challenge. Steve Francis left the Houston Rockets with more questions than answers. Ginobili had five of his 13 points in the final minute and Francis missed a desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer as the San Antonio Spurs continued their domination of the Rockets, 85-82. San Antonio won its sixth straight game against its intrastate rival by making the most of its possessions down the stretch. Ginobili had two slicing layups and a free throw in the final 58 seconds and his free throw left San Antonio with an 85-82 edge with 15 seconds to go. Ginobili beat Rockets guard Cuttino Mobley and got the ball over 7-6 center Yao Ming. "I just saw that I had an advantage on Yao so I threw it up high so he couldn't block it," Ginobili said. "You don't think about who is defending you, you take it up strong and hope it goes in or you hope you get fouled." "Ginobili made two tough plays at the end, he made those layups and those were very tough layups," Mobley said. "You really can't say too much. They hit those crucial shots at the end." Ginobili missed his second free-throw attempt and Yao Ming grabbed the rebound. Francis got the ball with 10 seconds to go and dribbled around the 3-point arc as time was winding down. With the defense expecting a tying attempt and applying pressure, Francis had no choice but to hoist up a desperation shot from the right wing that missed badly. "I thought I had them but (Robert Horry) recovered quick and I tried to go to the other side of the court and possibly find someone else but no one was open," Francis said. "Instead of letting the clock run out, I had to throw up a shot that was a gamble." The Spurs thought the defensive presence was the key in the final seconds, particularly the job done by the veteran Horry. "We switched everything on the last play," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "Robert Horry did a great job. He switched on Francis and then Tony (Parker) switched back. It was a good defensive possession for us." "I was playing him for the 3-pointer," Horry said. "I didn't care if he went past me. He tried to drive me and then he popped back and then I knew he going to shoot the 3-pointer. Steve likes to take the big shot so I got up on him and stayed in front." As the buzzer sounded, Rockets coach Jeff Van Gundy strolled across the court holding his head in hands. His team lost its third straight overall and fell to 11-16 in the conference. "We tried to pick-and-roll and they did a good job," Van Gundy said. "They are a great team. We could have taken a quick two but they defended it well." Tim Duncan had 28 points and 10 rebounds for the Spurs, who have won five straight overall. Ming had 25 points and Francis finished with 18 and 11 rebounds but made just 6-of-18 shots from the field. Houston missed 16 of 19 3-point attempts and committed 16 turnovers. "San Antonio is a great defensive team and they made it hard on us," Van Gundy said. "Obviously, some of the turnovers that we made were forced by San Antonio and some of them were just poor plays." Houston trailed, 67-54, following a bank shot by Duncan with 10:37 to go. Yao answered with a short hook that ignited a 22-9 burst. Francis buried a 15-footer with 3:24 to go, forging a 76-76 deadlock. Ginobili had layups 25 seconds apart, bookending a jumper by Yao. Jimmy Jackson missed a jumper for Houston with 28 seconds to go and Ginobili added his free throw 13 seconds later to cap the scoring.
