Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) -- When it mattered most, Dirk Nowitzki showed up and Keith Van Horn disappeared. Nowitzki had 27 points, 12 rebounds and a big fourth quarter as the Dallas Mavericks posted a 105-90 victory over the New York Knicks, who had their five-game winning streak stopped. Matched against Van Horn for much of the night, Nowitzki made 9-of-19 shots and did his best work in the fourth quarter, when he scored eight points to help the Mavericks keep the lead. "We broke their defense down a lot on the pick-and-roll," Nowitzki said. "We were driving and kicking and getting everyone involved. If you didn't have a shot, we drove it again. That's our best offense." It was a different story for Van Horn, who scored 18 points in the first half before being held to just two the rest of the way. "They stuck to mostly zone and I struggled to find openings in it, especially moving from the (small forward) to (power forward)," Van Horn said. "It was difficult to find openings and you have to give them credit for that." "He killed us in the first half," Nowitzki said. "We left him with wide-open shots. I think in the second half we did a better job of staying with him and forcing him into tougher shots." Michael Finley had 25 points and 10 rebounds and Antoine Walker added 14 and 10 for the Mavericks, who rebounded from Monday's disappointing loss at Atlanta. Dallas also beat New York for the fifth straight time. Stephon Marbury had 24 points and 11 assists for the Knicks, who lost for the first time in six games without guard Allan Houston (sore knees). Forward Kurt Thomas, the Knicks' best inside player and a Dallas native, was ejected with 6:07 left in the second quarter following a hard foul and head-butting motion toward Mavericks rookie Josh Howard. "I was (ticked) off about getting the offensive foul and what he was doing out there," Thomas said. "I wasn't even thinking. It was a mistake I made by head-butting him and I shouldn't have done it." When Thomas was ejected, Finley hit the technical foul shot to give the Mavericks the lead for good, 34-33. Knicks coach Lenny Wilkens thought losing Thomas was a major factor. "I think if we had Kurt, it is a close game all the way," Wilkens said. "We needed him on the floor and if he is on the floor, who knows? I think it goes down to the wire." Howard was not bothered by the physical contact as he matched a season high with 17 points on 8-of-11 shooting to go with eight rebounds, four steals and three blocks. Steve Nash added 12 points and eight assists for the Mavericks, who have won 13 of their last 16 games heading into the All-Star break. The Knicks pulled within 87-84 with 5:22 remaining on Marbury's layup, but Nowitzki converted a three-point play 22 seconds later, drawing the foul on Van Horn. After Shandon Anderson made two foul shots for the Knicks, Nowitzki hit a pull-up jumper in the lane and Walker scored inside, pushing the lead to 94-86 with 3:56 remaining. The Knicks got no closer than six points the rest of the way. Anderson netted 19 points and Othella Harrington 11 and 13 rebounds for New York, which has one game left before the All-Star break.
