Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- The Indiana Pacers did not overlook their final game before the All-Star break. All-Star Ron Artest scored seven of his 26 points during a key run in the second quarter as the Pacers rolled to a 103-84 rout of the Chicago Bulls. Win or lose, Indiana (39-14) was heading into its week off with a comfortable lead atop the Eastern Conference. But the Pacers held on to the league's best record by taking care of the Bulls (14-38), who own the second-worst mark in the NBA. "It was a tough game, because we're off for the break now," Indiana coach Rick Carlisle said. "Some teams' minds can wander when you're facing that time off. The guys came with a strong-willed effort." "You have to be ready for each game," Artest said. "Sometimes you just get ready for the good teams and not get ready for the teams that have a lesser record. You have to approach every game the same way." Indiana pulled away with a 26-8 run bridging the halves, turning a one-point lead into a 57-38 advantage just three minutes into the third quarter. Artest scored seven points during a 19-8 run to end the first half, and the Pacers scored the first seven points after halftime, including a pair of layups from Jeff Foster. During the spurt, Reggie Miller buried a pair of 3-pointers for his only points of the game and the Pacers never looked back, leading by as many as 29 points in the fourth quarter. Artest made 10-of-16 shots, 5-of-6 free throws and collected four rebounds and three assists in 34 minutes despite playing with an injured hand. "It's not a game I could really take off," he said. "Al (Harrington) wasn't playing and (Jonathan Bender) could have filled the void, but he just got back and he's not in shape. It was important for us to get (win) No. 39 tonight." All-Star Jermaine O'Neal collected 16 points and 10 rebounds and Austin Croshere added 12 points off the bench as Indiana won for the 18th time in 22 games. Eleven different players scored for Indiana. Harrington sat out with a bruised right shin. Eddy Curry scored 23 points to lead the lowly Bulls, who opened a season-high six-game homestand with their 13th loss in 15 games. "We did not show up, that's what it boils down to," Chicago coach Scott Skiles said. "I can stand here and put a positive spin on it, but that is an unacceptable effort from beginning to end." Chicago committed 19 turnovers, leading to 28 points for Indiana. "As a team we were off tonight," said Bulls guard Jamal Crawford, who scored 11 points. "When we start missing shots we put our heads down and don't play with the same intensity that we should." The Bulls led most of the first quarter behind Curry, who had 10 points. But the Pacers scored 14 of the final 22 points in the period and opened the second quarter with a 21-10 run to take the lead for good.
