Game Story

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- All-Star Peja Stojakovic appears to be in good form for the Shootout at All-Star Weekend. Stojakovic, the two-time defending champion of the shooting competition, nailed a long jump shot with three-tenths of a second remaining to lift the Sacramento Kings to a 96-94 triumph over the struggling Detroit Pistons. "I wouldn't bet against him," Kings coach Rick Adelman said. "He's the best shooter in the league right now, in my opinion." In a physical matchup that saw Detroit's Zeljko Rebraca and former King Corliss Williamson ejected for altercations with Sacramento's Brad Miller, the Pistons tied the game, 94-94, on a pair of free throws by All-Star Ben Wallace - a 51 percent foul shooter - with 24 seconds left. Detroit had a foul to give and used it on Mike Bibby with 6.2 seconds left. The ensuing inbounds pass went to Vlade Divac, who appeared to have a clear path to the lane but elected to flip it to Stojakovic on the right wing. "Their guy (Bobby Sura) helped toward me, so I knew I had to give the ball up," Divac said. "I wanted to take the shot, but Peja was open." Stojakovic, who had his right toe on the arc, swished his jumper and ran downcourt with his arms at his side. "That was a great look and a great play," Stojakovic said. "It worked for us all night - we put Mike, Vlade and I in the corner and worked off each other's screens. That time, it was me who got open, but we had gotten a lot of great shots for Mike off the same play tonight." "He shoots like Larry Bird out there," said Detroit's Richard Hamilton, who scored 27 points. "When he took that last one, I knew it was going in, because he'd been making those all night." Sura was well off on a desperation shot at the buzzer, sealing the Pistons' season-high fifth straight loss. Bibby scored 26 points, Stojakovic added 25 and Miller chipped in 18, 15 rebounds and five assists for the league-leading Kings, who have won seven of eight heading into the break. Wallace had 17 points and 19 rebounds for the Pistons, who began the game shooting 1-of-13 but finished at 48 percent (38-of-80). Sacramento jumped out to a 14-2 lead as Detroit missed its first eight shots. The Kings led by as many as 15 points but the Pistons rallied in the second quarter to take a 50-49 lead into the break. The Kings held a 65-56 lead when Miller and Rebraca got entangled going for a rebound with 5:08 left in the third quarter. Rebraca felt he had been elbowed and threw a couple of punches at Miller, with one grazing the top of his head. Rebraca was ejected for the blows. "I didn't even realize he threw a punch at me. I just felt him grabbing at me and I tried to get away from him," Miller said. "If they would have called anything on me, I would have called the league office, because I just walked away from him." With 32 seconds left in the period, Williamson was whistled for a flagrant-2 violation for leveling Miller as he drove down the lane. "It was a hard foul, but I believe he had some extra theatrics," Williamson said. "The way the game was going, I guess the refs thought they had to take control."
