Game Story

OAKLAND, California (Ticker) -- There aren't many people outside of the Bay Area who know the identity of "The Custodian." Brian Cardinal is trying to change that. In just his fourth career start, Cardinal scored a career-high 32 points to lead the Warriors to their sixth victory in nine games, a 110-99 triumph over the Phoenix Suns. Entering this season, Cardinal had scored just 52 points in 28 games over three seasons with two teams. But he has flourished in his first season with the Warriors, earning the nickname "The Custodian" for wiping the floor clean with his frequent dives. "I got here early and got some shots up," Cardinal said. "I knew I needed to come in here and bring my energy and tonight I was fortunate enough to knock down some shots. My team did a great job feeding me while I was hot. It was a great night especially heading into the All-Star break." With a previous career high of 24 points, Cardinal scored 23 in the first half, sparking the Warriors to an 18-point lead after one quarter and a 58-39 halftime advantage. Cardinal is shooting 63 percent (34-of-53) in his last six games. "Brian Cardinal was a big surprise, a lot of people did not even think he would make our roster," Golden State coach Eric Musselman said. "I thought he would be the type of player I would like for this organization." Early in the third quarter, the Warriors stretched the margin to 25 points before Phoenix cut the deficit to 10 on its first possession of the fourth quarter. That's when Cardinal re-emerged, scoring nine points in the final period to help seal the victory. He also tied career highs in field goals (10-of-14), and free throws (10-of-11). "Last night, tonight, every night the guy is a player," Phoenix coach Mike D'Antoni said. "The guy is a great shooter, a hard worker and fundamentally sound. I'm not surprised by what he scored (tonight)." Speedy Claxton scored 19 points and set career highs with 13 assists and seven steals. Claxton became the first Warrior to have six or more steals in back-to-back games since Chris Mullin accomplished the feat in January 1991. Claxton had six steals in Tuesday's win at Seattle. "This was a big win," Claxton said. "We finally put together a back-to-back this year and it was a great win leading into the break. It was my type of game. I like getting into the passing lanes, getting steals, and creating havoc out there." "We have a 21-year old rookie point guard (Leandrinho Barbosa) and Speedy took advantage of that," D'Antoni said. Amare Stoudemire, who guarded Cardinal most of the game, scored a season-high 33 points on 11-of-20 shooting for Phoenix, which has lost five straight games and 11 of 13. "I feel like I'm back in rhythm," Stoudemire said. "I missed a couple shots early, but coach told me to keep my head up and keep shooting. I wasn't satisfied though."
