Game Story

MEMPHIS, Tennessee (Ticker) -- The Memphis Grizzlies knew the Los Angeles Clippers were down. They decided to kick them anyway. Pau Gasol led five players in double figures with 22 points as the Grizzlies won for the fourth time in five games, defeating the shorthanded Clippers, 110-102. The Clippers played without Corey Maggette and Quentin Richardson, two of their top three scorers. Maggette sat out with a sore hip and Richardson has a deep right thigh bruise. Memphis (30-22) moved to eight games over .500 for the second time this season and is 19-7 at the Pyramid. Entering the All-Star break, the Grizzlies have more wins than they have had in any full season in franchise history. "We are doing things right," Gasol said. "Nobody expected us to be where we are. We know we have a good chance to make something happen here. We just have to play hard because every game is going to count in the end. People are starting to expect us to win." The Grizzlies appeared as if they would blow the game wide open early by opening an 18-point second-quarter lead on their way to a 64-47 haltime advantage. However, the road-weary Clippers, playing the eighth game of an NBA season-high nine-game road trip, would not go away. Los Angeles closed to cut 100-95 with 2:42 remaining on a pair of free throws by rookie Matt Barnes. The Grizzlies answered by scoring the next five points, opening a 105-95 lead on Mike Miller's fourth 3-pointer with 1:21 left. Miller finished with 15 points. "When you are missing 40 points from your lineup, that is part of it, but everyone has that problem," Los Angeles coach Mike Dunleavy said. "I thought our guys could have taken care of the ball a little bit better, but we had a chance and we were in the game." "Mike Dunleavy is doing a great job," Memphis coach Hubie Brown said. "This is their eighth straight game on the road and they've scored 100 five times (on the trip). Tonight, he's without his second- and third-best players. I give him a lot of credit." Jason Williams added 15 points and 10 assists for Memphis, which has won three straight home games. The Grizzlies improved to 18-1 when scoring triple digits. "It's a big win for us," Miller said. "When you get to the 30 (wins) mark, it gets exciting. We have 30 more left, so we have to be ready when we come back." Elton Brand led the Clippers with 24 points and 15 rebounds. Eddie House, starting in place of Richardson, added 19, 10 and seven assists for Los Angeles, which has lost four in a row. "When we got it down to five, I thought we were going to win that game," Brand said. "Missing Corey and Q today, of course that's going to hurt; they're two of our top three scorers."
