Game Story

NEW ORLEANS (Ticker) -- The New Orleans Hornets showed some of the pride Tim Floyd and Darrell Armstrong were talking about. Baron Davis had a terrific all-around game and the Hornets started the second half with a 20-2 run that sparked a 106-98 victory over the New York Knicks. One of three Eastern Conference teams boasting two All-Stars, the Hornets had lost five of their last six games. After Saturday's loss at Milwaukee, Floyd and Armstrong had a spirited exchange, although both agreed the team had not shown much fight of late. "With everything that went on Saturday night, hopefully we made a statement with myself and coach getting into it," Armstrong said. "I hope everybody understands the reason we do it is because this team is not playing the way that we should be playing. Hopefully that got through to all the guys." "Everybody's professional," Davis said. "Coach has to vent and let out some steam because he was frustrated. Everybody deep inside knows we've got to come out and start to play better." Facing a 54-49 halftime deficit, the Hornets took control at the outset of the third quarter. P.J. Brown scored eight of his 12 points in the surge, which Davis capped with a 3-pointer for a 69-56 lead with 6:19 left. "We always talk about coming out in the first five minutes of the second half and setting some type of tempo, and I thought we did that on both ends," Brown said. "I hadn't seen that type of basketball in a while." Floyd noticed a change from his players on defense. "(In the first half), we were just erect, just playing the game erect," Floyd said. "In the second half, we kind of got down in a stance and started moving our feet, got active." Armstrong, scoreless through the first three quarters, made the lead stand as he sank a trio of 3-pointers in the final period. Each rebuilt the lead to double digits and demoralized the Knicks. "When the game's on the line, I've just got to focus in and knock 'em down," Armstrong said. "Those are shots I know I can make." Headed to the All-Star Game, Davis had 29 points, eight rebounds, seven assists and a career-high six steals as he dueled Knicks point guard Stephon Marbury to a virtual draw. Marbury had 29 points and 10 assists. Jamal Mashburn scored 19 points and Magloire - also an All-Star - added 13 and 11 for the Hornets, who shot 49 percent (40-of-82), including 9-of-20 from the arc. Penny Hardaway scored 19 points and Keith Van Horn added 14 and 13 boards for the Knicks, who played without Kurt Thomas. The power forward was suspended one game by the NBA for head-butting Dallas forward Josh Howard on Tuesday. "I don't want to make excuses for us," Knicks coach Lenny Wilkens said. "We still should have won this game without Kurt. But Kurt had been playing so well and we lost that tonight."
