Game Story

DENVER (Ticker) -- Carmelo Anthony and Nene continued to build off their impressive All-Star Weekend. Anthony scored 28 points and Nene collected 18 and 11 rebounds as the Denver Nuggets rolled to a 106-85 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers. The Nuggets did not have any players in the All-Star Game, but Anthony and Nene were in Friday's Rookie Challenge. Anthony scored 17 points and combined with fellow rookie LeBron James on a number of alley-oops, but Nene helped lead the sophomores to victory with 10 points, eight rebounds and six assists. Anthony continued his stellar rookie season in his first game since the break, making 11-of-21 shots to go with six rebounds and six assists. He scored nine points in the third quarter as the Nuggets pulled away. "It was a great win. We started off what we finished before the All-Star break," he said. "This game was to see where we were at mentally and physically. Every game we want to get better. I think we've done that." Denver was clinging to a 57-56 edge early in the third quarter before scoring 17 of the next 23 points. Philadelphia never recovered, managing only 31 points in the second half. Voshon Lenard, who won the 3-point Shootout on Saturday, had 15 points as the Nuggets swept a season series from the 76ers for just the fourth time in 26 years. Marcus Camby had 14 points and 12 rebounds and Andre Miller added 14 points and nine assists for Denver, which scored 56 points in the paint and 27 on the fast break. "That was a solid win. We had five guys in double digits," Denver coach Jeff Bzdelik said. "We had a pretty spirited practice yesterday and I think that helped us get out of the gates. I wrote these keys up on the board before the game: run, attack and share." Philadelphia overcame a slow start prompted by the benching of star guard Allen Iverson, who missed the team's practice on Monday. He entered the game at 4:39 of the first quarter and finished with 27 points and 14 assists in 36 minutes. "I was angry all day," Iverson said. "Most frustrating thing was hearing that I don't have respect for my teammates and my teammates don't have respect for me. When I get my opportunity, I play hard like I always do." The 76ers had their only lead of the game at 43-42 midway through the second quarter, but the Nuggets responded with a 15-2 run. Nene and Anthony each scored four points during the spurt, which gave Denver a 57-45 cushion with 98 seconds left. Philadelphia ended the first half with nine straight points and made the opening basket of the second half before falling apart. After shooting 55 percent (23-of-42) in the first half, the Sixers made only 11-of-33 shots in the final 24 minutes. "We had big cold spell there in the second half," 76ers coach Chris Ford said. "We just couldn't put any points on the board. You credit their defense but also we just missed some open shots. I think four days hurt some of the guys. We have to continue to get back in the gym and work hard again."
