Game Story

MINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) -- The most prolific scoring trio in the NBA helped the Minnesota Timberwolves keep the Phoenix Suns in a miserable slump at the Target Center. Kevin Garnett, Sam Cassell and Latrell Sprewell combined for 75 points to lead the Timberwolves to their eighth straight home win over the Suns, 110-95. Phoenix has not won at the Target Center since April 2, 2000. "You're always concerned the first game back from the All-Star break," Minnesota coach Flip saunders said. "I thought we had a few lapses and some uncharacteristic turnovers, but overall it was a good win. Now it's time to get ready for Sacramento." Garnett had 32 points and 14 rebounds, Cassell added 22 points and Sprewell chipped in 21 as the three each scored over 20 for the 17th time this season. The mark is the most in the NBA since Chris Mullin, Tim Hardaway and Sarunas Marciulionis accomplished the feat 17 times for the Golden State Warriors in 1991-92. "Spree was great in the first half with 17 points, KG did his thing over the course of the game and Sam made some big shots in the fourth quarter," Saunders said. Phoenix stayed close behind Amare Stoudemire's 29 points, trailing just 78-74 after three quarters. However, Garnett shut down the second-year forward in the final period, holding him to only one point as Minnesota closed with a 21-6 run. "I thought we played pretty good defense," Garnett said. "I thought we were aggressive around the basket. Sam hit some big shots in the fourth quarter and that was it." Cassell scored eight straight points for the Wolves during the game-ending spurt. "Kevin and myself felt kid of fatigued because of the jet lag and all the events last weekend," Cassell said. "We did what we had to do, it was a gutty win. We played team basketball. Our role players stepped up and did what they were supposed to do." After the "big three" scored 51 of Minnesota's 59 first half points, the other Wolves came alive after halftime. Guard Trenton Hassell scored eight of his 10 points in the second and the bench chipped in with 19. The Suns lost their sixth straight game and fifth in a row on the road. They have the second-worst road record in the NBA at 6-23. "They are a great team," Phoenix coach Mike D'Antoni said. "Cassell stepped up for them and hit three or four straight shots down the stretch and then they always have KG. We have to start playing better defense as a team because if we don't we will continue to lose games." "I think we can match up with any team in the league right now," Stoudemire said. "I just don't think we played hard enough." Minnesota point guard Troy Hudson returned to the lineup after missing the previous eight games due to a sprained right ankle. Hudson had five points and three assists in 18 minutes. "My ankle felt really good," Hudson said. "It's still a little dinged up, but hopefully I can stay away from the injuries and continue to strengthen it."
