Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Eddie House would not allow the Los Angeles Clippers to completely fall apart down the stretch. After his team blew a 13-point fourth-quarter lead, House made a jumper with 1.8 seconds left to give the Clippers to a 102-100 triumph over the reeling Boston Celtics, who lost for the 10th time in 11 games. Elton Brand scored a season-high 39 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for the Clippers, who swept the season series for the first time since 1996-97. Brand sank 14-of-22 shots and 11-of-14 free throws for the Clippers, who had lost the final five contests of their NBA season-high nine-game road trip and were playing their first home game since January 27. "Lack of execution and (26) turnovers made this one tough," Brand said. "(But) we fought hard and got the win." The Clippers held a 92-79 lead after a three-point play by Brand with 7:07 remaining and a 99-90 cushion with 2 1/2 minutes to play before the Celtics reeled off 10 straight points, taking a 100-99 edge on a layup by rookie Marcus Banks with 46 seconds left. "I am extremely proud of how we fought back in the fourth quarter," Celtics interim coach John Carroll said. "When a team has been in losing situations, it does not show this kind of resiliency. I am happy with how we battled out there, but at times the NBA can be a bit cruel. If you don't make plays, you lose, and tonight they just made more plays than us." After Keyon Dooling split a pair of free throws with 27 seconds left to tie the game, Boston's Paul Pierce missed an open 18-footer with nine seconds to play. Following a timeout, the Clippers inbounded to House, who broke free from Banks thanks to a scree from Brand and swished a floating jumper from the right side. "Eddie came up with a big play at the end," Clippers coach Mike Dunleavy said. "We were fortunate to get a stop on the other end. Pierce had a great look at the basket. We had some good fortune there. Most of the time, he's going to make that shot." "I told (Brand) if you set a good screen for me, I'm coming off and I'm gonna hit it, period," House said. The Celtics did not have any timeouts left, and Banks front-rimmed a difficult 3-pointer at the buzzer. The Clippers played most of the game without guard Quentin Richardson, who was tossed after picking up two quick technicals for arguing a foul call with 50 seconds left in the first quarter. Richardson made a franchise-record eight 3-pointers and scored 36 points in a 95-86 win in Boston on February 4. Los Angeles trailed by as many as 10 points in the final minute of the first quarter but grabbed a 42-40 lead on a pair of free throws by Brand four minutes into the second period and held the lead until Banks' shot late in the fourth. "We got off to a little bit of a shaky start getting down early and with Q getting thrown out, but I thought guys came off the bench and gave us a lot of energy defensively," Dunleavy said. "On the evening, we had 43 deflections. That's one of the all-time highs since I've been coaching here."
