Game Story

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- Reggie Miller and Jamaal Tinsley gave the Indiana Pacers a boost when they needed it most. Tinsley and Miller came up big in the fourth quarter as the Pacers rallied for a 96-87 victory over the struggling Washington Wizards. The Eastern Conference's top team, the Pacers squandered an 11-point halftime lead, then rallied from an eight-point deficit in the fourth quarter. Miller and Tinsley sparked a 23-6 run over the final 7:12 of the contest. Miller scored nine points in the burst and Tinsley eight, including back-to-back 3-pointers with les than 70 seconds remaining to seal the win. "He's played very courageously when it's come to stepping up and taking big shots," Carlisle said of Tinsley. "That's the second or third time this year where he's hit a decisive shot in the waning minute or two of a game." Miller finished with 24 points and Tinsley had 19 and 10 assists for Indiana, which played its first game without Ron Artest. The All-Star forward is sidelined indefinitely after undergoing thumb surgery Thursday. Gilbert Arenas netted 27 points to lead the Wizards, who have lost four straight. They had dropped their previous three contests by margins of 25, 26 and 22 points. After trailing by as many as 18 points in the first half, the Wizards showed immediate life in the second half as they started the third quarter with a 10-0 run to pull within 50-49. Arenas had 11 points and Jerry Stackhouse added nine of his 15 in the period, giving Washington a 71-68 lead. A three-point play by rookie Jarvis Hayes gave the Wizards their biggest lead, 81-73, with 8:13 remaining in the fourth quarter. But the Pacers rallied. Jeff Foster hit 1-of-2 free throws with 7:12 left and Miller buried a 3-pointer and two foul shots, quickly tightening things. Arenas' jumper with 2:41 to go gave the Wizards their last lead, 87-86. All-Star Jermaine O'Neal scored 23 seconds later to put the Pacers ahead for good and, after Arenas missed a jumper, Tinsley drilled a 3-pointer from the top of the key with 1:10 to go. "It was in the flow of the offese, the kick from Reggie on the first one," Tinsley said. "Gilbert held me, (Miller) kicked it out, I hit the shot." "He's been working on (threes) in practice and after practice, which has been the key," Miller added. O'Neal collected 19 points and 10 rebounds and Jonathan Bender added 11 points for the Pacers, who rebounded from Tuesday's 89-75 home loss to New Orleans. "Washington made a great run coming out of halftime and they were dominating us physically for a period of about 12 or 13 minutes," Carlisle said. "The last 10 minutes, we went back with our starters and said, 'Hey, let's buckle down and try to play our game and claw back into it.'" Wizards coach Eddie Jordan protested the miss by Arenas, claiming his point guard was pushed by Tinsley. He was shouting at the officials as they left the court at the end of the game. "I stepped back and he gave me a shove," Arenas said. "I thought it was a foul, but they said I jumped into him, so I'm not going to argue." Tinsley provided the dagger by banking in a 3-pointer with 37 seconds to go, pushing the lead to 94-87.
