Game StoryPORTLAND, Oregon (Ticker) -- The Boston Celtics dug themselves a hole very few teams could dig out of, let alone a squad with losses in 11 of 12 games. Zach Randolph scored 12 of his 27 points in a decisive game-opening run as the Portland Trail Blazers posted their third straight win, a 105-84 dismantling of the woeful Celtics. Randolph was the key contributor as Portland scored the game's first 22 points and never looked back. He had 15 points and six rebounds in the opening quarter - Boston had 16 and five. During the opening run, Boston was in disarray. The Celtics committed turnovers on three of their first four possessions, then came out of a timeout and saw Ricky Davis try a wild layup. Boston finally scored on a 3-pointer by Walter McCarty with 5:48 left but never got closer than 13 points thereafter. "I have never been involved in a game like that, where a team starts 22-0," Portland coach Maurice Cheeks said. "It was just a case of us getting out, making some shots, them making some shots, and the end result was us building up the big lead." "When you dig a hole that deep, you're fighting an uphill battle," Celtics coach John Carroll said. "They played hard from the beginning, they played extremely confident and they made great shots. We played just the opposite." Qyntel Woods and Damon Stoudamire added 16 points apiece for Portland, which led by 37 early in the fourth quarter and coasted to its most lopsided victory of the season. The 16 points were a career high for Woods, who was 6-of-9 from the field. Chris Mihm had 15 points for Boston, which fell to 1-5 on a season-high seven-game road trip. Derek Anderson opened the scoring with two free throws, Randolph followed with an 18-footer, two foul shots and a layup. Stoudamire found Randolph for another long jumper to make it 10-0 and Darius Miles had a breakaway layup 3:36 into the game. Stoudamire ran off seven straight points to make it 19-0 and Theo Ratliff dunked before Randolph capped the burst with a 21-footer. "(Zach) really brought the energy tonight," Miles said. Portland shot 63 percent (12-of-19) in the opening quarter and led 32-16. Boston missed 14-of-20 shots and was outrebounded 15-5. "I don't think I've ever been a part of 22-0, but I like it," Ratliff said. "Being down 22-0, what else can you say to that?" McCarty said. Randolph recorded his 31st double-double, the fifth highest total in the NBA. "I think Randolph is getting more comfortable, but this was a wacky kind of game," Cheeks said. "These numbers probably don't tell all the story of the game."
