Game StoryOAKLAND, California (Ticker) -- The Seattle SuperSonics have seen enough of "The Custodian." Brian Cardinal scored 21 points and grabbed a key rebound that led to Clifford Robinson's go-ahead 3-pointer with 55 seconds remaining as the Golden State Warriors pulled out a 94-92 victory over the SuperSonics. Cardinal has earned the moniker "The Custodian" for his frequent dives and consistent hustle. In his first season with the Warriors, he made his seventh start and teamed with Jason Richardson on a defensive effort that frustrated Ray Allen and Rashard Lewis. "I just try to go out there and spark the team and try to make plays, make effort plays, energy plays," Cardinal said. "And I was able to do that, knock the ball out a couple of times and I was able to get the rebound. And then Cliff was able to step up and make a huge shot for us to win the game." "Brian's playing excellent basketball, the best I have ever seen him play," Warriors forward Calbert Cheaney said. "He works hard, his work ethic is unparalleled among most guys in the league, and I think that's the difference between his game now as opposed to the past." The 6-8 Cardinal played 40 minutes and grabbed nine rebounds, helping Golden State improve to 5-10 in games decided by five points or fewer. His biggest hustle play came when he rebounded Richardson's missed jumper with 1:02 to play. Robinson followed with an uncontested 3-pointer from the right side. "He made some big plays," Robinson said. "I thought he did a great job at chasing down loose balls. He's done that all year." Seattle had a chance to tie, but Ronald Murray's jumper was short and Richardson rebounded his own missed layup for a 91-87 advantage with 16 seconds to play. After Vladimir Radmonovic missed a jumper for the SuperSonics, Richardson split a pair at the line with 10 seconds left. Antonio Daniels converted a three-point play on Seattle's next possession to make it 92-90, but Nick Van Exel made a free throw. In a game that featured 54 fouls, the Warriors held Allen and Lewis in check. Allen scored nine points and Lewis finished with 12 as both players fouled out with more than three minutes remaining. Allen shot 2-of-10 and his night ended when he was called for an offensive foul with 3:57 remaining. He was visibly upset with the officials and continued his criticism after the game. "There were so many bad calls down the stretch that decided the outcome of that game," Allen said. "In this league, we play the game because the fans want to see us play the game. Nobody comes to see the referees. For them to have an outcome on the game like that is ridiculous." The Warriors were coming off one-point home losses to the Los Angeles Lakers and Portland and never led by more than five points. They erased a five-point deficit in the final 2:50 and won the season series with Seattle for the first time since 1991-92. "It was very important for us to get a win tonight," Richardson said. "Coming off of two one-point games, we knew that it was going to be a close one." Seattle took an 85-80 lead on Radmonovic's 3-pointer. But Ansu Sesay picked up a technical foul for throwing Cardinal to the court during a scramble with 1:57 left and the Warriors scored six straight points. The SuperSonics had a chance to tie with one second remaining, but Radmonovic's right foot touched the 3-point line as he drilled a long jumper.
