Game Story

INDIANAPOLIS (Ticker) -- All-Star Jermaine O'Neal did not make a lot of baskets against the Utah Jazz but did a lot of everything else. O'Neal contributed 21 points, 10 rebounds and seven blocks to lead the Indiana Pacers to a 94-80 triumph over the feisty Jazz, who hung tough for three quarters. Reserve Austin Croshere tied a season high with 15 points for the Indiana, which saw coach Rick Carlisle ejected late in the second quarter after he ran onto the court to protest an offensive foul against Reggie Miller. Assistant Mike Brown coached the team thereafter. "I understand officials have tough calls to make, but we had two players, Reggie Miller and Jermaine O'Neal, who weren't getting the respect they deserve out there," Carlisle said. "That's why I did what I did. I'm proud of the team for sticking together." "You don't think about it," Brown said of stepping in as coach. "You just focus on winning the game. It just happens. Guys can either fold or use it as a rallying cry, and tonight they used it as a rallying cry." Croshere had to restrain Carlisle after he was tossed for the second time this season. "I'm kind of the designated keep-Rick-from-getting-suspended guy," Croshere said. "A couple of weeks ago against New Jersey, I had to do the same thing. He's stronger than I thought, so tonight, I put a little extra shoulder into it to get him out." O'Neal was just 4-of-10 from the field but connected on 13-of-15 free throws for the Pacers, who went 40-of-50 from the line and set a league high for attempts in a game this season. Utah was 22-of-31 from the stripe. "At the point that Rick got thrown out, I knew I had to step my game up," O'Neal said. "We can't worry about the refs. They're going to call what they're going to call - I've never seen one change their call. You appreciate your coach trying to stick up for his players." Indiana trailed, 64-59, before embarking on a 20-4 run bridging the final two quarters. The Pacers took the lead for good, 67-66, on a dunk by Jonathan Bender with eight-tenths of a second left in the third quarter. Croshere scored the last five points of the burst, giving the Pacers a 79-68 cushion with 6:04 remaining. Utah got no closer than nine points thereafter. "We started getting good shots that we couldn't make," Jazz coach Jerry Sloan said. "We don't judge the clock good enough. They have the ability to dominate, and our guys panicked and got scattered. We held our heads down and felt sorry for ourselves. They're more athletic with the ability to attack anyone. We played with them for three quarters." Andrei Kirilenko scored 22 points and Raja Bell added 21 off the bench for the Jazz, who lost for the fourth time in five games. "We missed a lot of layups again," Kirilenko said. "That's been a big problem for us lately. When that happened, it allowed them to get aggressive and we ended up fouling them and then they shot a lot of free throws."
