Game Story

TORONTO (Ticker) -- The Sacramento Kings took advantage of the Toronto Raptors' weakness in the middle to bounce back from their worst first half of the season. Peja Stojakovic scored 27 points and Mike Bibby added 21 as Sacramento got hot in second half to post a 96-81 victory over the Toronto Raptors. Stojakovic had 15 points in the first half, but the Kings shot just 32 percent (14-of-44) and trailed, 47-39 - their lowest point total of the opening half. "I think we played really poorly in the first half," Sacramento coach Rick Adelman said. "Offensively, we were totally out of it. We were playing with no intensity at all in the first half. It was almost like we expected to win." Sacramento shot 61 percent (20-of-33) from the field in the second half, when it outscored Toronto, 57-34. The Raptors held a 24-14 edge in points in the paint in the first half, but the Kings held a 20-4 advantage after intermission. In addition, the Kings outrebounded the Raptors, 49-37, including 17-9 on the offensive glass. "We eliminated the touches of their big guys and we had good rotation on the defensive end," Stojakovic said. "We finally just made some shots in the second half." "I think defensively we picked it up," said Sacramento center Vlade Divac, who had 13 points and 12 assists. "We covered the paint better and we were more active. That allowed Peja to get the shots." Rookie Darius Songaila contributed 15 points and 10 rebounds for the Kings, who became the third team to reach the 40-win plateau this season. They are finished their three-game trip with a 2-1 mark and have won 10 of their last 13 away from home. Sacramento also improved to 13-0 against Central Division teams, going 7-0 on the road. Rookie Chris Bosh scored 20 points and Donyell Marshall had 18 and 13 rebounds as Toronto matched its season high with its fifth straight defeat. It also lost five in a row from January 17-25. "Bibby and Stojakovic started making shots and when we overcompensated trying to check those guys, other guys were able to get some easy baskets," Raptors coach Kevin said O'Neill, whose team shot 45 percent. "We turned the ball over too many times (16, leading to 22 points) that led to jump shots." Already playing without injured stars Vince Carter and Jalen Rose, the Raptors were without forward Lamond Murray, who was suspended for conduct detrimental to the team. The Kings went on a 17-2 run midway through the third quarter. They held a two-point lead to start the final period and built an 88-73 advantage with 6:08 left. "We can't give up, we have to keep playing," Marshall said. "Teams make runs at us and we put our heads down and pretend like it's over. There was a lot of basketball left when they made their run. They took the lead at the end of the third quarter but we had the whole fourth quarter to go."
