Game Story

MINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) -- The San Antonio Spurs used a dual unconventional approach to beat the Minnesota Timberwolves: Tony Parker led the offense and Tim Duncan made his free throws. Parker scored 26 points and Duncan made 7-of-8 free throws in the fourth quarter as the Spurs held on for a 94-92 victory over the Timberwolves, who had a five-game winning streak snapped. The Spurs (37-19) won for the seventh time in eight games - all but the first win on the road - and moved within three games of the first-place Timberwolves (40-16) in the Midwest Division. They never trailed as they spoiled a Sunday afternoon for a Target Center record crowd of 20,347. "This was a great road trip for us," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "There's no question that being up five (games) would've been huge," Minnesota coach Flip Saunders said. Usually a secondary option in the offense, Parker matched his season high. He made 12-of-22 shots and fueled the attack both early and late. "This was a big win because the Cleveland loss (on Friday) hurt us," Parker said. "It was important for us to finish the road trip on a good note." "Tony Parker kept us on the ropes a little bit the whole night," Minnesota superstar forward Kevin Garnett said. Duncan, the two-time NBA MVP who is shooting just 58 percent from the line this season, made two of his first six free throws. But he made six in a row before splitting a pair with 14 seconds left, giving San Antonio a 93-90 lead. "Timmy always makes the big free throws," Parker said. "Every time there's been a big free throw, I've always seen him hit it." "Without those free throws, I doubt we get the win," Spurs guard Manu Ginobili added. Sam Cassell penetrated for a short jumper, and Minnesota fouled Ginobili with eight seconds to go. Ginobili missed the second free throw to leave the door open, then slammed it shut as he prevented Latrell Sprewell from getting off a last-second shot. "I was guarding (Wally) Szczerbiak in the corner and I saw Sprewell open on the wing, so I went over to help," Ginobili said. "I knew the time was running down." "We just had a miscommunication on what side we wanted to run the play," said Cassell, who passed cross-court to Sprewell after being trapped on the right side. "I chose one way, and Spree went the next way. It happens." Duncan scored 25 points and Hedo Turkoglu added 13 and 14 rebounds for San Antonio, which held a 49-42 rebounding edge. Garnett had 28 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists for Minnesota, which never has won a division title. "You can't let Turkoglu come in and get 14 rebounds," Saunders said. "That shouldn't happen." Two 3-pointers by Turkoglu early in the fourth quarter gave San Antonio a 76-66 lead. Cassell, who scored 24 points on 10-of-14 shooting, made a jumper and 3-pointer to cut the deficit to 82-79 with 5:31 to go. Parker made a driving bank shot, then missed a lane leaner that Duncan put home for an 88-81 lead with 3:39 left. His banker just over two minutes later made it 90-83. "He was extremely aggressive," Saunders said. "He made some big shots, made some big plays for them."
