Game Story

SEATTLE (Ticker) -- The Boston Celtics did not learn their lesson about letting the Seattle SuperSonics shoot 3-pointers. Rashard Lewis and Ray Allen combined to make 11 of a season-high 18 3-pointers for the SuperSonics, who rolled to a 108-87 victory over the struggling Celtics. Boston defeated Seattle in the first meeting between the teams on December 10 despite allowing 17 3-pointers on 41 attempts. The SuperSonics were better in the rematch as the league's best 3-point shooting team shot 55 percent (18-of-33) from the arc. "When you are playing a team that shot 41 in our first game, you know it's a big weapon of theirs," Boston coach John Carroll said. "Even though we beat them in Boston, they had a lot of good open looks. On their home court, if you give them the same type of looks, it can be devastation." Lewis made 6-of-11 3-pointers en route to 28 points and Allen was 5-of-10 and finished with 20 for Seattle, which never trailed after the first quarter. "We did a lot of penetrating and we had a lot of easy stuff," said Allen, who had 10 of Seattle's 35 assists. "Sometimes we become too reliant on the 3-point shot and you've got to go to the basket." The SuperSonics led by as many as 10 points in the second quarter and had a 51-41 halftime cushion. They started connecting on their 3-pointers in the second half, making 4-of-7 attempts in the third quarter and 8-of-11 in the fourth. "We thought we could get some shots out of our offense," Seattle coach Nate McMillan said. "We had good movement and we did a good job of finding each other and locating the shooters, Anytime we move the ball we're tough to defend because we have guys that can shoot the ball." Lewis made a pair of 3-pointers and scored 10 points in the third and rookie Luke Ridnour dominated the fourth, scoring 13 of his 15 points in the final 12 minutes. Ridnour made all three of his shots from 3-point range. Allen and Ansu Sesay each buried a pair of 3-pointers in the fourth and Ronald Murray capped the assault with 27 seconds left, giving Seattle its largest lead at 108-85. Jerome James scored 13 points and Antonio Daniels dished out 10 assists as the SuperSonics won for just the fourth time in their last 13 games. Paul Pierce scored 34 points to lead Boston, which lost the final six games of a seven-game road trip and fell to 1-11 since Carroll replaced Jim O'Brien on January 26. "It was just one of those nights," Pierce said. They came out and had an extraordinary performance from the 3-point line. That kills you."
