Game Story

PHILADELPHIA (Ticker) -- Larry Brown's first win against his former team came when his current squad desperately needed it. Ben Wallace had 12 points, 13 rebounds and six blocks in a defensive-minded game as the Pistons held on for a 76-66 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers, who played without star guard Allen Iverson. Philadelphia had won its first two meetings with its former coach but struggled without Iverson, who was sidelined with a sore right shoulder. Detroit took advantage for just its second win in 10 games, temporarily halting a freefall. "We need a win any way we can get it, whether they're banged up or not," Brown said. "I didn't think that we played great. I wasn't happy with the decisions that we made, but we finished it out and we did some good things defensively." The Pistons led by as many as 18 in the second half, but the Sixers rallied in the fourth quarter, pulling within 67-63 on Greg Buckner's 3-pointer with 5:39 left. Detroit capped a stellar defensive effort by not allowing a basket thereafter, holding Philadelphia to just three free throws. "Every time we got a lead they came back because they had so much effort," Brown said. "Every time we had control, they made a run and we didn't respond very good. We were real fortunate that they didn't make shots." Wallace had a thunderous dunk with 3:21 remaining but was called for a technical after arguing he was fouled on the play. Rookie Kyle Korver made the ensuing free throw to make it 71-66, but the Sixers missed their final 10 shots and did not score again. Wallace added a free throw with 2:44 left, Tayshaun Prince sank a pair from the line 35 seconds later and Richard Hamilton capped the scoring with a layup as the Pistons scored eight of the game's final nine points. The Pistons tied a season high with 14 blocks, recorded 10 steals and held the shorthanded 76ers to 30 percent shooting (25-of-83) from the floor. "The fact that we couldn't put the ball in the basket, that was the most frustrating thing all night," Philadelphia coach Chris Ford said. "We had good looks around the hoop. It was frustrating." Hamilton scored 15 points and Rasheed Wallace added 10, 11 rebounds and four blocks in his second full game with Detroit, which snapped a four-game road losing streak. Eric Snow had 12 points and nine assists and Kenny Thomas collected 10 points and a season-high 18 rebounds for the Sixers, who did not help their cause from the line, where they made just 15-of-23 attempts. Philadelphia lost for the 14th time in their last 19 games and fell to 2-3 under Ford, who took over just before the All-Star break. "We were playing without A.I. and I thought our guys gave us a legitimate shot to win the game," Ford said. "I was happy the way our guys battled back. ... They could have easily folded the tent, but they didn't."
