Game Story

ORLANDO, Florida (Ticker) -- Derek Anderson's clutch shooting in overtime kept the Portland Trail Blazers red hot. Anderson scored eight of his 18 points in the extra period as the Trail Blazers held off the Orlando Magic, 93-91, for their fifth straight victory. "I think before we had so many guys demanding the ball at certain times of the game," Anderson said. "Now me and Damon (Stoudamire) are penetrating and getting guys shots and ourselves shots. It is not a one-man team. We are playing five man basketball now." Zach Randolph collected 24 points and 12 rebounds and Damon Stoudamire added 17, nine and seven assists for Portland, which has won five consecutive games for the first time since January 20-28, 2003. Theo Ratliff, acquired in a trade two weeks ago, continued to boost the defense of the Trail Blazers, blocking a career-high nine shots, including two in overtime. "DA came up big for us in OT," Portland coach Maurice Cheeks said. "Theo was an anchor for us in the middle and when he didn't block a shot, he got guys thinking about him. He really controlled everything." Ratliff emphatically sent Steven Hunter's dunk attempt back in his face with Portland clinging to an 88-85 lead in overtime. Hunter had slipped a shot in over Ratliff the previous trip downcourt. "That was a game-saver," Cheeks said. "He had two hands on that one. When you get a guy in the middle who can block shots like that, it's big for us." "I am an Eastern Conference product," Ratliff said. "I know guys want to try and get to the goal for easy buckets, but we tried to make them take tough shots." Orlando used a 6-0 spurt to get within 81-80 in the last minute of regulation. Randolph drove around Juwan Howard for a layup with 22 seconds to play, but Rod Strickland answered with a game-tying 3-pointer - just his 10th of the season - with 14 seconds to go. Stoudamire rushed a 3-pointer as time expired, sending the game to overtime. Portland improved to 5-2 in extra time. "We changed our chemistry a lot," Randolph said. "We are working hard and working together. Tracy McGrady scored 31 points on 11-of-32 shooting for the Magic, who were trying to win four in a row for the first time this season. "Tracy hasn't shot the ball as well as he normally shoots it," Orlando coach Johnny Davis said. "There are times when a guy goes through a stretch like that. He'll bounce back, it's just one of those spells." "We're playing better basketball, simple as that," Juwan Howard said. "We know in order to win in this league you've got to win the hustle plays. Lately we've been doing it, if we continue to do it we'll win ballgames."
