Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- Without Allen Iverson, the Philadelphia 76ers have trouble scoring. Without Glenn Robinson and Kenny Thomas, they have trouble competing. The 76ers had another anemic offensive performance and dropped further out of the playoff race with an 86-75 loss to the revamped Atlanta Hawks, who got big games from Stephen Jackson and Chris Crawford. Iverson, a three-time scoring champion, again sat out with a sore right shoulder. He missed Monday's loss to Detroit in which Philadelphia scored just 66 points, the second-lowest total in franchise history. He also scored 50 points in a win here November 29. Thomas, the team's leading rebounder, missed Tuesday's game with a sprained thumb. Robinson, the team's second-leading scorer, missed the second half with an elbow injury. "When you don't have your top scorer, your second scorer, Kenny Thomas and Derrick Coleman, who plays tough down low, it's very hard," guard Aaron McKie said. "The odds are stacked highly against us." "I think everybody in that locker room should be disappointed," 76ers coach Chris Ford said. "They have to decide if they want to get after it. ... We knew it was going to be a tough game. I just thought we could have attacked it better." Already trailing 48-38 at halftime, the Sixers went the first 8 1/2 minutes of the third quarter without a basket, falling behind by 24 points to the Hawks, who have made two huge trades in the last two weeks and are just learning to play with each other. "It wasn't pretty at times but we got it done," Hawks coach Terry Stotts said. "All the roster recent activity has taken an emotional toll on the team." "I'm pretty surprised. Usually it takes a while," Crawford said. "We're just playing basketball - seeing somebody open and playing good defense." In the first half, Jackson scored 16 of his 24 points and Crawford 11 of his 19. They each made jumpers to open the second half before Crawford dunked for a 54-38 bulge. A 3-pointer by Jason Terry, who scored 17 points, made it 64-41 with 6:25 left, and the rout was on. Rookie Kyle Korver's 3-pointer at the 3:37 mark ended the basket drought for Philadelphia. "Like a Jersey drought in summertime," said Ford, whose team missed 15 straight shots. Eric Snow scored 17 points for the Sixers (23-35), who have lost 15 of their last 20 games. They fell to 2-4 under Ford and one-half game behind Cleveland into 10th place in the Eastern Conference standings. The top eight teams make the playoffs, which Philadelphia has not missed since 1998. "It's not fun," Snow said. "I want to win. I have never played an NBA season and not went to the playoffs, and not have games at the end of the season mean anything. And that's the way we're going. Everybody needs to look at themselves in the mirror." Jackson also had 11 rebounds for the Hawks, who held the Sixers to 36 percent (26-of-72) from the field and forced 17 turnovers. Bob Sura, acquired from Detroit last week, had eight points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals off the bench. "The new guys are playing with something to prove," Terry said. "They play hard on both sides of the floor. Defensively, we do a lot more talking." Atlanta guard Dion Glover (groin) and forward Zeljko Rebraca (back) suffered first-half injuries and did not return.
