Game Story

INDIANAPOLIS (Ticker) -- The Golden State Warriors became the latest team to be victimized by Indiana Pacers All-Star Jermaine O'Neal. The best player in the Eastern Conference this season, O'Neal scored a season-high 34 points and blocked four shots to lead the Pacers to a 107-96 triumph over the Warriors. O'Neal made 14-of-24 shots for Indiana, which connected on 52 percent (44-of-85) en route to its sixth win in seven games overall and 14th in 20 games against Western Conference opponents this season. "That's probably the best I've shot all year," O'Neal said. "That's something I've been looking to do all year. I was able to put together two halves of offensive basketball." "Jermaine seemed to hit all the big shots," Warriors coach Eric Musselman said. "He hit one big shot after another." Jamaal Tinsley chipped in 13 points and 11 assists for the Pacers before sitting out the fourth quarter after colliding with teammate Al Harrington. Tinsley's backup, Anthony Johnson, and fellow reserves Fred Jones and Jonathan Bender each reached double figures for the Pacers. "We're playing 10 guys and the guys off the bench really made a solid contribution tonight," said Pacers coach Rick Carlisle, whose squad improved to 5-0 this season without injured All-Star Ron Artest. "The second unit is really coming together. Jonathan Bender is coming into his own offensively." "I am beginning to get the feel of things out there now and my teammates are really helping me," said Bender, who scored 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting. "As far as Ron Artest, I look over there and see him jumping and cheering and it really makes me want to do well." The Pacers trailed, 68-63, midway through the third quarter before closing the period on a 17-6 run. The Warriors could not get the deficit below six points in the final 12 minutes. "I thought they kept their starters in there towards the end of the third quarter and we made some substitutions," Golden State forward Clifford Robinson said. "Our guys weren't able to match their energy. They kept playing at a high level and because of that were able to seize control." Former Pacers first-round pick Erick Dampier collected 22 points and 12 rebounds for Golden State, which slipped to a Western Conference-worst 6-21 on the road. "We weren't able to stop him," O'Neal said of Dampier. "He's so strong down low. He seals well, and he can catch and finish. We haven't seen many players like him this season. Our key was stopping some of the other guys."
