Game Story

MILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- Another convincing win by the Minnesota Timberwolves was merely an afterthought. Sam Cassell scored 29 points and Latrell Sprewell added 23 as the Timberwolves held on for a 108-102 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks, who lost rookie point guard T.J. Ford to a scary injury in the final minutes. Minnesota never trailed after the first quarter and dominated most of the game but did not celebrate much after the late play that created some tense moments at the Bradley Center. Ford was driving to the basket with 4:34 remaining when he collided with Timberwolves forward Mark Madsen and came down hard on his tailbone. He laid on the floor nearly motionless before he was tied to a stretcher, wheeled off the court and taken to a hospital for X-rays. "I don't know what happened or how he landed," Milwaukee coach Terry Porter said. "But whenever they bring the board out, you have to be concerned." "I hate to see anybody to get taken off on a stretcher, let alone a teammate," Bucks forward Joe Smith said. "It's tough to see someone get carted off like that." The Bucks trailed by 11 when Ford left the game but used the loss of their teammate to spark a rally and pulled within 103-100 on Keith Van Horn's 3-pointer with 16 seconds left. "At that point, we were more concerned with T.J.'s status," Porter said. "We weren't really worried about rallying." Cassell and Fred Hoiberg combined to make six free throws in the final 15 seconds as the Timberwolves avoided their first losing streak since late November. "We had them down 10 with four minutes left," Cassell said. "We knew the only way they could come back was to shoot threes. Our composure is great. We don't get rattled about losing leads." It was a triumphant return to Milwaukee for Cassell, who was traded to Minnesota in the offseason following four-plus seasons with the Bucks. "I don't have grudges against Milwaukee," he said. "I did my part here. I had a successful 4 1/2 years here. It was my time to move on." Kevin Garnett collected 16 points, 18 rebounds and six assists for Minnesota, who shot 55 percent (42-of-76) from the floor and won for the 15th time in their last 19 games. Minnesota has won 10 consecutive meetings with Milwaukee dating to March 29, 1999 and has not lost at the Bradley Center since February 8, 1995 - the year before drafting Garnett. Van Horn finished with 25 points on 9-of-11 shooting and made all five of his 3-pointers as the Bucks shot 48 percent (36-of-75), including 9-of-19 from the arc. "Whenever you let the team shoot 55 percent, I don't care what you do offensively, they're usually going to win," Milwaukee guard Damon Jones said. Michael Redd scored 25 points and Jones added 11 and 12 assists off the bench as Milwaukee lost for the seventh time in 10 games since moving a season-high six games over .500.
