Game Story

NEW ORLEANS (Ticker) -- Jamaal Magloire played like a "Big Cat." Magloire had 21 points and 14 rebounds and P.J. Brown also had a strong game as the New Orleans Hornets posted a 99-93 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers. Nicknamed "Big Cat," Magloire played small in Monday's 104-100 loss at Cleveland, when he scored just seven points and grabbed seven rebounds. But he rediscovered his All-Star form, making 9-of-14 shots and anchoring a strong effort by the Hornets' frontcourt. "I took that game very hard," Magloire said. "I know everybody else did as well. We found it unacceptable that we lost a 25-point lead, so we had to come and redeem ourselves." "I'm not surprised at his performance," Brown said. "I knew he would come back strong. He was playing like an All-Star tonight." Brown was the other half of the solid frontcourt duo as he had 14 points and 12 rebounds, helping the Hornets avoid a third straight loss while gaining a split of the season series with the Clippers. "I don't think we are playing great Hornet basketball right now, but did what we had to do tonight," Brown said. "After Monday night's loss, we needed a win in the worst way." Elton Brand had 19 points and 12 rebounds for Los Angeles, which has lost seven of its last eight road games. "We just can't get over the hump," Brand said. "Turnovers here, bad play here, lack of execution there, and that's the ballgame." A pair of free throws by Brand with 2:48 remaining had the Clippers within 87-85, but Brown sank a pair of jumpers around a follow shot by Magloire, pushing the lead to eight with 1:24 to go. "He (Magloire) was unstoppable down there," Hornets guard Baron Davis said. "He was a force in the first half and really established stuff on the inside. Second half, he just got a lot of key rebounds and opportunities and we were able to get some easy fastbreaks because of him." The Hornets committed two turnovers and had a five-second violation, allowing the Clippers to pull within 95-93 with 17 seconds left. But Darrell Armstrong sank two foul shots to seal the victory. Davis scored 26 points and handed out nine assists for the Hornets, who shot 49 percent (36-of-73), including 7-of-15 from 3-point range. Davis was 4-of-7 from the arc. Davis also had a running dialogue for much of the night with Quentin Richardson, who collected 18 points and eight rebounds. Richardson disappeared in the fourth quarter, when scored just three points. Davis had eight in the final period, including a 3-pointer with 6:58 left that gave the Hornets the lead for good, 79-76. "It just shows the type of player he (Davis) is," Clippers forward Corey Maggette said. "He wants to be the guy that takes the big shots for his team and do a lot of things and he did ... He had like 10 assists." Chris Wilcox added 18 points and Maggette 16 for Los Angeles, which shot 42 percent (36-of-86) and committed eight of its 13 turnovers in the fourth quarter.
