Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) -- Losing the season series to the Dallas Mavericks may be the least of the San Antonio Spurs' concerns. Michael Finley scored 30 points as the Mavericks rolled to a 115-91 victory over the Spurs, who lost two-time NBA MVP Tim Duncan to a thigh injury. The Spurs fell to 0-3 against the Mavericks, who clinched the season series for the first time since 1989-90. But they suffered a bigger loss when Duncan suffered a left thigh contusion with 7:32 left in the third quarter. Duncan, who has not missed more than eight games in any of his previous six seasons, collected 22 points and 17 rebounds. He was favoring his right leg earlier in the game but left after planting the left leg while trying to defend Dirk Nowitzki. After the game, he spent time in the trainer's room, then limped to a golf cart before he was taken to the team bus. He will be examined Friday in San Antonio, where the team plays its next four games. "Tim has some sort of thigh contusion, but he'll probably miss a little bit of time," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. Without their best player, the Spurs struggled on both ends. They were trailing, 64-57, when Duncan exited and watched the Mavericks run off the next eight points. "He said nobody touched him," San Antonio guard Tony Parker said. "If it happened like that, I hope he's fine. I hope he's OK. Everyone was wondering what happened." Finley scored 12 of Dallas' team-record 46 points in the third quarter. He opened the period with a dunk and closed it with a 3-pointer from half-court at the buzzer. "I didn't see that coming," Mavericks coach Don Nelson said. "I was worried about the game after watching San Antonio play the last three or four ballgames. They've been playing at a really high level and I thought we would have our hands full." "I guess it helped that Tim Duncan was out for a while," added Nowitzki, who scored 23 points. "But I think we really did the job. We got some easy baskets on some easy looks and we were able to do the things we wanted." Duncan missed San Antonio's first loss to Dallas with an ankle injury and spent the rest of this one watching from the bench as the Spurs never recovered. The Mavericks opened the fourth quarter with an 11-0 run and handed San Antonio its worst loss of the season. Dallas moved within a half-game of the second-place Spurs in the Midwest Division. The season series ends March 5 in San Antonio. "It's big in a lot of ways," Mavericks forward Antoine Walker said. "We just have to constantly keep up with this team and make sure to stay in this race and keep it tight because we are fighting for home-court advantage." "It's a big win for us, not only within the division but also within the conference overall because they are ahead of us," Finley added. "To get a win against them gets us closer to a higher seed and, more importantly, it gave us the advantage if it comes down to a series against the two teams."
