Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Bobby Simmons checked into the game for his defense with 51 seconds left. Thirty seconds later, his jump shot won the game. Simmons' 16-footer from the right baseline with 21 seconds to play propelled the Los Angeles Clippers to a 96-94 victory over the reeling New York Knicks, who have lost five straight games. Clippers coach Mike Dunleavy inserted Simmons, a noted stopper, for Corey Maggette as Chris Wilcox split a pair of free throws, cutting the deficit to 94-93. "I just got my feet set and waited for the ball," Simmons said. "Everybody wants to get in the game, so when you get the opportunity, it's important you make plays or you sit. It is as simple as that." It appeared that neither team wanted to win down the stretch. After Marko Jaric's basket put the Clippers up, 92-90, with 5:11 to go the teams missed their next 13 shots until Simmons came through. New York had two chances to grab the lead or draw even in the final 21 seconds. First, Kurt Thomas' missed a foul-line jumper with Wilcox in his face. Then, after Quentin Richardson made 1-of-2 free throws, Thomas missed a wide-open shot from the right elbow with one second left. "The look I got at the end was good, but I sat for so long and I wasn't able to get my legs under it," Thomas said. "We need a win to put an end to this losing streak." Thomas only played 16 minutes due to foul trouble. "We feel like if we can get stops on people, we can win games, and tonight it was a team effort that got that last stop on New York," Richardson said. Richardson led six Clippers in double figures with 23 points. Elton Brand added 19 and 12 rebounds as Los Angeles won for just the third time in 10 games. Simmons scored 12 points. The Knicks trailed for virtually the entire game until rookie Mike Sweetney's basket gave them an 85-83 lead with just under 10 minutes to play. Tim Thomas sank two free throws with 1:13 left to give the Knicks a 94-92 lead before Los Angeles scored the final four points. New York was 2-of-11 from the arc but shot 30-of-33 at the free-throw line to keep close. The Clippers scored 62 points in the first half, shooting 47 percent. Knicks guard Stephon Marbury cemented his reputation as a Clipper killer with 28 points and nine assists. Against Los Angeles, Marbury had 42 points on February 8 and 40 with Phoenix on December 29. "If you can say anybody did a good job on somebody who scored 28 points, I think Marko and the team played him strong," Dunleavy said.
