Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) -- The Dallas Mavericks have countered their road struggles with increased dominance at home. Antoine Walker scored 25 points and Steve Nash had 22 and 11 assists as the Mavericks extended their winning streak to seven games with a 111-91 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers. The Mavericks shared the NBA's best record last season, thanks in part to the league's best road mark. They already have more road losses this season than in 2002-03 but have improved at home, where they are a league-best 27-4. "We love playing at home," Nash said. "We love playing in front of our home fans and the energy we get from them. That's why we play well here." Dallas has won the first four games of a five-game homestand, extending its winning streak at American Airlines Center to seven games by taking control early against Portland. "We are a very confident team," Walker said. "It's an important homestand for us and next month is our season with 11 games on the road." The Mavericks had a 40-32 edge midway through the second quarter before reeling off 20 of the next 28 points. Nash scored five points during the burst and Walker finished it with a 3-pointer for a 60-40 cushion. Dallas shot 57 percent in the first half and had a 66-48 halftime cushion. The Mavericks led by as many as 22 early in the third but was held to 14 points in the quarter as the Trail Blazers rallied. "We never seem to make it easy," Dallas coach Don Nelson said. "We were humming along and the third quarter comes along and we find a way not to keep doing what we were doing. We settled for too many outside shots, but we got it back in the fourth quarter." Portland pulled within 84-77 on a dunk by Darius Miles with 8:59 remaining, but Dallas responded with an 8-2 run that was capped by a layup by Walker. All-Star Dirk Nowitzki scored 21 points for Dallas, which shot 52 percent (46-of-89) from the floor, scored 50 points in the paint and committed just nine turnovers. Zach Randolph had 18 points and 11 rebounds and Miles and Damon Stoudamire scored 16 points apiece for the Trail Blazers, who have lost two in a row following a season-high five-game winning streak. "We fought our way back, but it was a long mountain, and with a good team you can't do that," said Portland guard Derek Anderson, who scored 14 points. Portland, which played its fourth road game in six days, shot just 40 percent (32-of-80) from the floor against one of the league's worst defensive teams. "We have a couple days off and are going to try and get our rhythm back," Trail Blazers coach Maurice Cheeks said. "We have a chance to go back and regroup and get to know each other a little bit more and try and win these next few games at home."
