Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- Tracy McGrady scored the bulk of his points in the first half but saved the important ones for when the Orlando Magic needed them most. McGrady scored 23 of his 30 points before halftime and made a key jumper with 64 seconds left to lift the Magic to a 104-99 victory over the Atlanta Hawks. The Hawks climbed within 91-88 on a tip-in by Joel Przybilla with 1:23 left. But McGrady, who missed his previous five shots, drained a jumper to restore a five-point cushion. Atlanta got no closer than four the rest of the way. McGrady, who added 12 rebounds and four steals, appeared to favor his right ankle after landing awkwardly in the third quarter. But that did not keep him from scoring at least 30 points for the third straight game. "That's my job," McGrady said. "If I don't do it, we don't win." Chris Crawford tied a career high with 27 points and Stephen Jackson added 24 for the Hawks, who lost for the fifth time in six games. Tyronn Lue scored 19 points for the Magic, including a 3-pointer with 2:20 left that gave them a 91-86 lead. Lue made 4-of-7 shots from the arc. Orlando led by as many as 11 points in the third quarter, making it 62-51 on a jumper by DeShawn Stevenson with 9:15 left. Atlanta whittled the deficit to 74-72 when Bob Sura made 1-of-2 free throws with 1:29 left. Sura had 14 points and 12 rebounds and shook off a bloody lip suffered in a first-half collision with a cameraman. "McGrady made a lot of plays tonight and it's tough when they've got a guy like that," Sura said. "Our margin of error is very small. We have to play hard, play smart and play together the whole time." The Hawks made just 15-of-27 free throws, with Przybilla going 2-of-7. Przybilla scored just six points but grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds. Orlando was 25-of-31 from the line. "We went to the free-throw line and knocked them down to close out this victory," McGrady said. "It's tough to do on the road." Stevenson, Juwan Howard and Drew Gooden each scored 12 points for the Magic while Howard grabbed 10 rebounds in the slow-paced game. "Not a pretty game on either side," Orlando coach Johnny Davis said. The game officially was a sellout, but many fans were there for a postgame concert by a gospel group and the arena did not appear crowded until late in the game.
