Game Story

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- The New Jersey Nets woke up in time to avoid their first losing streak under interim coach Lawrence Frank. Kenyon Martin scored nine of his 18 points in the fourth quarter and made a spectacular defensive play in the final minute as the Nets rebounded from their first loss in more than a month with a 92-86 victory over the Miami Heat. With Miami traliing 88-85, Heat rookie Dwyane Wade drove the right baseline with 20 seconds left, but Martin ripped the ball out of Wade's hands in midair. Kerry Kittles added a pair from the line to give New Jersey a 90-85 cushion with 13 seconds to play. Martin also grabbed 15 rebounds for his 25th double-double of the season. "Kenyon, you saw him again," Frank said. "Superman is back in the building with that rebound and block. Kenyon is a very special guy and really stepped up huge for us in the second half." "It's just one play in many," Martin said of his block. "It was a big block and a big possession, but I've done it before. That wasn't my first time." Coming off Wednesday's 81-68 defeat in Minnesota that snapped a 14-game winning streak, the Nets came out flat against the Heat and possibly were caught looking ahead to Sunday's contest against the Los Angeles Lakers. But the Nets erased a 48-38 halftime deficit to improve to 14-1 under Frank. Richard Jefferson paced New Jersey with 25 points and Jason Kidd added 20. Kidd handed out only three assists, matching a season low, but the Nets got to the line a season-high 49 times, making 37. New Jersey made 13 straight free throws in the final five minutes. Jefferson was 15-of-19 from the line, setting Nets' individual season highs for free throws made and attempted. Martin's three-point play snapped a 75-75 tie with 4:53 left and ignited a 7-0 spurt that allowed the Nets to take control. Martin and Jefferson each hit a pair from the line to make it 82-75 with 3:50 remaining. "Today was the first time we got to see Dwyane Wade amd he dominated the game for the first two quarters," Jefferson said of the Miami guard who scored only four of his 15 points in the second half. "Once we figured out his game, we started playing him a little different and we were a little more successful again him." Eddie Jones scored 21 points and Caron Butler added 18 for Miami, which has dropped two in a row following a four-game winning streak. "We just didn't make any plays," said Miami's Lamar Odom, who fouled out with five minutes left after scoring only 10 points. "I had to watch almost the whole game (because of foul trouble). At the end of a game like that, they had more experience than us." Frank improved to 14-0 against the Eastern Conference since replacing the fired Byron Scott. Saturday marked only the second time he was won a game by less than double figures.
