Game Story

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- Kobe Bryant's triple-double more than made up for a barrage of 3-pointers by Gilbert Arenas. Bryant had 25 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists and Shaquille O'Neal scored 29 points as the Lakers recorded a season high for points in a 122-110 win over the Washington Wizards. It was the ninth career triple-double for Bryant and first since January 10, 2003 against Cleveland. "When they told me at the end of the game, I was pretty surprised," Bryant said. "I felt like I was playing a good all-around game, but I didn't know I had a triple-double." O'Neal had just two rebounds but made his presence felt on the offensive end, dunking off an alley-oop pass from Bryant to make it 98-93 with 6:38 left. "Kobe was just being Kobe tonight, making great moves and making great shots," O'Neal said. "As long as he keeps playing like that and I keep playing like that, then we should be fine." Opening a four-game road trip, the Lakers put away the game with a 12-0 run that began with a three-point play by Bryant and ended on a three-point play by O'Neal that opened a 108-95 cushion with 4:23 remaining. "We throw all of our big guns at him pretty much," Wizards coach Eddie Jordan said of defending O'Neal. "You just can't do a lot with him." O'Neal made 13-of-17 shots, helping the Lakers shoot 55.6 percent (50-of-90) from the field. Arenas tied a franchise record with eight 3-pointers and scored 35 points for the Wizards. Jerry Stackhouse, who said after the game that he will sit out the rest of the season due to a recurring knee problem, added 20 points and Kwame Brown had 18 and 10 assists. Washington was coming off back-to-back wins in which it allowed an average of just over 80 points. But the Wizards again were unable to contain the Lakers, who scored 120 points in a win over Washington last November. "We just have to keep coming out to play," Arenas said. "We got to treat every game like the Lakers." Washington was able to keep things close, sinking three straight 3-pointers - two by Arenas and one by Jerry Stackhouse - to cut the deficit to 80-75 late in the third quarter. Bryant sank a long 3-pointer to end the period and give the Lakers an 88-83 advantage. "We wanted to come out in the second half and put that lead back up to 15, like we had in the first half, and try to get through the game without extending ourselves, but the Wiz really pushed us into having to play a hard game physically," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said. Los Angeles used a 20-5 second-quarter run to build a 54-39 lead. Derek Fisher scored six straight points to make it 42-34 before baskets by Luke Walton and O'Neal capped the burst.
