Game Story

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- Gary Payton took out his frustration on the New Jersey Nets. Payton scored 10 of his 16 points in the first quarter and Shaquille O'Neal had 19 points and 14 rebounds as the Los Angeles Lakers capitalized on a hot start and rolled to a 100-83 rout of the Nets. Payton made news Saturday when he complained about playing time and his role in the offense, suggesting he may want to leave the team following the season. He did not look disgruntled on the court but instead led an aggressive early charge by the Lakers. "I'm not worried about it anymore," Payton said. "I just wanted to be out on the floor a little bit more so I can help. We'll just move on." The veteran point guard scored six of Los Angeles' first eight points and made 4-of-7 shots in the first quarter, helping the Lakers open 26-17 edge. Horace Grant had 10 of his season-high 14 points in the second period as the Lakers pulled away. "We just came out and established the defensive part of the game," Payton said. "We did a lot of good things. Everybody was making shots. We kept (the Nets) in front of us and we didn't let them get back and do things they like. It made it a lot easier for us." New Jersey shot just 30 percent (12-of-40) from the floor and 10-of-18 from the line in the first half, falling into a 49-35 hole. The Nets never recovered, trailing by as many as 28 points in the fourth quarter. "In the first half, they shoot 41 percent and Shaq and Kobe (Bryant) were relatively non-factors, but we couldn't make any shots," Nets coach Lawrence Frank said. "It's hard to describe." Los Angeles sealed the game in the third quarter, when it made 11-of-20 shots, including 4-of-8 3-pointers. The Lakers scored 22 of the final 30 points in the quarter and had a 75-49 cushion after Bryant's 3-pointer with 33 seconds left. "I kept telling the players as we went through the game they should get ready for the charge the Nets are going to lay on us, but we never got it," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said. "They had an off game and we played a relatively good game." Bryant, who had scored at least 25 points in seven straight games since the All-Star break, had 11 points and 10 assists for the Lakers, who improved to 2-0 on their four-game road trip. "I think we can play much better," he said. "It's the type of game we'd like to have, everybody contributing and everybody playing well. It was a good performance by us." Richard Jefferson scored 19 points of 5-of-9 shooting to go with seven rebounds and five assists for the Nets but had little help. Kenyon Martin was held to 11 points and seven rebounds and fellow All-Star Jason Kidd had 10 points and just three assists. New Jersey shot just 41 percent (32-of-77) from the floor, including 5-of-17 from 3-point range, and made only 14-of-22 free throws. "We came out from the beginning and had great looks," Jefferson said. "We just couldn't hit a shot. We missed layup after layup. It was just one of those nights." The Nets had a nine-game home winning streak snapped, losing at Continental Airlines Arena for the first time since January 17. They have lost two of three following a franchise-record 14-game winning streak, the longest in the NBA this season.
