Game Story

BOSTON (Ticker) -- Mark Blount accomplished something no Boston Celtic had in nearly a decade. Blount set career highs with 28 points and 21 rebounds, leading the Celtics to a 117-96 triumph over the Orlando Magic. Blount became the first Celtic with at least 20 points and 20 rebounds in a game since Ed Pinckney accomplished the feat on April 19, 1994. Doing most of his damage in the second half, Blount was a key component in a 25-0 run that opened the fourth quarter and turned the game into a rout. "I owe it to hard work," Blount said. "I'm not doing anything different, just working hard. I've been playing with the same guys now for a while and I feel real comfortable. These guys look for me and make my job easier." Blount made 13-of-21 shots as Boston ran its winning streak to three games - its longest since January 7-11. The Celtics also improved to 11-1 in their last 12 home games against the Magic. "Mark was outstanding tonight," Boston interim coach John Carroll said. "Nobody works harder and nobody deserves it more. We needed these wins. We are now right back in the thick of things for the eighth (playoff) spot." "We needed this win and we got it done," Blount said. Tracy McGrady had 29 points for Orlando, which has dropped three of four and fell to an NBA-worst 16-45. Paul Pierce had 25 points, nine assists and seven rebounds and Chucky Atkins added 17 points and nine assists as the Celtics rolled offensively. Ricky Davis made 9-of-14 shots off the bench as Boston posted its second-highest point total of the season. The first half was tight with Orlando holding a 57-56 edge after 24 minutes. The teams combined to commit just seven turnovers over the first two quarters and the game remained a see-saw affair over the first 10 minutes of the third quarter. The Magic were within 81-79 following a jumper by DeShawn Stevenson with 2:11 left in the third quarter when a layup by Blount ignited a 31-3 run. Blount had 14 points and seven rebounds in the third quarter alone and recorded a three-point play, a couple of assists, a steal and a block in the first 7 1/2 minutes of the fourth as Boston turned an 87-82 lead into a 30-point advantage with 4:32 to go. "We took care of business against a team we needed to beat tonight," Pierce said. "Mark was amazing. He grabbed eveything near him. Mark is one of the guys we look to. He has been so great, probably better than any big man since I've been here." "Blount was a monster tonight," McGrady said. "We didn't have an answer for him. We kept it close until the fourth, then we just went ice cold. They took it to us and didn't let up." Atkins had eight points and Davis seven in the 25-0 spurt. Boston was 11-of-22 from the field in the quarter, including 5-of-9 from 3-point range. "Sometimes you see the sunshine, sometimes you see the rain," Carroll said. "Tonight, we got the sunshine." "We fell apart," McGrady said. "That was as bad a quarter as we can possibly play." Magic guard Tyronn Lue had 14 points and tied a career high with 11 assists. He did not have a turnover. Orlando was without starting forward and leading rebounder Juwan Howard, who was sidelined with a stomach flu.
