Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- Kirk Hinrich scored 22 points and capped a decisive second-quarter burst with a 3-pointer as the Chicago Bulls posted a 92-81 triumph over the Cleveland Cavaliers. Hinrich chipped in eight rebounds and seven assists in his first game since becoming the only rookie this season to record a triple-double. "If Kirk can continue to play like this he will emerge as the leader of this team," Bulls forward Jerome Williams said. "That's a lot to say for a rookie in this league." Following the game, Hinrich all but refused to address his recent play, choosing to focus on a team that has split its last eight games and will be seeking a season-high third straight win on Wednesday. "Kirk must be old school to downplay his performances," Bulls coach Scott Skiles said. "It is not typical of a young player to downplay anything." Eddy Curry and Antonio Davis netted 18 points apiece for the Bulls, who handed the Cavaliers just their second loss in six games. Davis' point total matched his season high. Cleveland was within 32-29 following a basket by Zydrunas Ilgauskas 3:38 into the second quarter, but Ronald Dupree had a free throw 16 seconds later to ignite a 13-1 burst and Chicago never was headed. Ilgauskas led the Cavaliers with 19 points and star rookie LeBron James chipped in 18 on 7-of-17 shooting. "He didn't seem to have a bad game to me, but in the NBA there are a lot of games where you are not going to play your best," Hinrich said of James. "We caught him on a flat night." Chicago has won two of the three games between the teams this season. "Give them credit for a heck of a game all around," Cleveland coach Paul Silas said. "This was a big win for them. ... In the second quarter, we just didn't have it. We were very flat tonight. We were about due for a game like this." "Tonight we were just a step slow," James said. "When you don't make your shots though, you can't (take advantage). ... The hardest thing to do in this league is win on the road." Linton Johnson followed Dupree's free throw with a 3-pointer and Hinrich had a dunk with 5:27 to go in the half for a 38-29 lead. Eric Williamas had a free throw for Cleveland but Curry buried a hook shot and Davis hit two free throws for a 12-point bulge. Hinrich then capped the spurt with a 3-pointer off a feed from Jamal Crawford with 3:39 remaining. The lead was 51-37 at the half and Cleveland never cut the deficit to single digits in the second half. When the Cavaliers got within 55-45 with 8 1/2 minutes left in the third quarter, Chicago responded with a 10-2 run. Hinrich had five points in surge - including another 3-pointer - and Curry had four free throws. "Kirk played well, he stepped up and made plays," Crawford said. "He's consistent and getting better every game." "I love Kirk," Davis said. "He goes out there every single night and you know when he is on the floor he's going to give you everything he has. He is making smart plays and he's playing as hard as anyone I've seen in a long time." Cleveland's Carlos Boozer had his team-leading 26th double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds. Ilgauskas had 10 rebounds for his 17th double-double of the season. "They hustled and did it to us tonight," Ilgauskas said. "This was not a wake up call for us, we haven't played a bad game in a long time, this just happened to be the one."
