Game Story

TORONTO (Ticker) -- Stephon Marbury and Allan Houston had their way against the Toronto Raptors' guards. Marbury had 35 points and nine assists and Houston added 16 points as the New York Knicks rallied to defeat the Raptors, 109-103, for their ninth win in the last 11 meetings. Nazr Mohammed chipped in 20 points and 18 rebounds for the Knicks, who trailed by 12 points before embarking on a 15-2 run to take an 86-85 lead on a jumper by Marbury with 1:01 left in the third quarter. The game was tied, 97-97, before Houston made a jump shot and a 3-pointer around a pair of free throws by Marbury to open up a 104-97 cushion with 2:56 left. Toronto got no closer than five points thereafter. "I was making some tough shots and got to the line 11 times," said Marbury, who made 10-of-11 free throws. "The lanes were there. When you play with a guy like Allan Houston, he opens up everything." It was the Knicks' second straight win after a six-game losing streak. They are in sixth place in the Eastern Conference, one game ahead of Boston and 1 1/2 ahead of Toronto, Cleveland and Miami. "This is a big win for us because we've been up and down the last few weeks," Houston said. "You want to consider yourself on an upswing and you can only do that if you prove it and win games." Vince Carter collected 32 points and nine assists and Donyell Marshall added 19 and 11 rebounds for the Raptors, who have dropped 11 of their last 12 games overall. "We did not have enough points in the end," Carter said. "We gave up a lot of easy baskets, transition baskets to them. We scored and then turned around and Stephon is laying it up right behind us. Things like that are unacceptable." Toronto was outrebounded 49-37 overall and 19-8 on the offensive glass. "Giving up 20 offensive rebounds, it's really hard to beat anybody when you do that," Raptors coach Kevin O'Neill said. "That's too many possessions for them and too many opportunities." "Regardless of the offensive rebounding, we were still in the game, we still had a chance to win and we didn't get the job done," Carter said. "We are at the point now, regardless of what we don't do well, we have to find a way to win." Knicks coach Lenny Wilkens, the NBA's all-time leader in wins, was fired from the Raptors after they went just 24-58 last season. "You can't (take it personally)," Wilkens said. "When you start taking things personal, let me tell you something, you're going to be in trouble, and as a person I don't do that. I'm not vindictive. I move on."
