Game Story

DENVER (Ticker) -- The Detroit Pistons kept the Denver Nuggets reeling. Rasheed Wallace scored 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as the Pistons rolled to a 97-66 rout of the Nuggets, who were held without a field goal for more than 12 minutes spanning the second and third quarters. Denver became the first team since the advent of the shot clock without a double-figure scorer. The last time a team did not have a player score at least 10 points was November 22, 1950, when the Fort Wayne Pistons defeated the Minneapolis Lakers, 19-18. "Plain and simple, they kicked our butts," said Nuggets coach Jeff Bzdelik, whose team has lost seven of its last eight games. "Good thing we are playing tomorrow night (against Indiana) so we have a chance to get our pride back. They outhustled us, they outran us." "Denver has been struggling so you want to jump on them quickly," said Pistons guard Tayshaun Price, who scored 11 points. After Nene's dunk gave Denver a 34-33 lead with 6:09 left in the first half, the Pistons scored 40 of the next 45 points. The Nuggets did not get another basket until Andre Miller made a 10-footer with 5:41 left in the third quarter. Detroit ended the first half with a 23-3 spurt, then scored 17 of the first 19 points in the third quarter. The Nuggets missed 19 straight shots during a span of 12 minutes, 27 seconds. "It was just embarrassing," Denver guard Jon Barry said. "Anything basketball-related, we were beaten at." Star rookie was one of six Nuggets who scored eight points but made just 3-of-17 shots from the field. With the outcome no longer in doubt, Anthony spent most of the second half on the bench. "During an 82-game season, you are going to have some jewels and you are going to have some bummers, and this was a bummer," Bzdelik said. Corliss Williamson scored 14 points and Lindsey Hunter added 13 for the Pistons, who posted their sixth straight win over the Nuggets. Chauncey Billups handed out a season-high 13 assists. "This was a good game for us," Billups said. "They have been struggling and we know they are capable of getting up and down in this gym. We controlled the tempo, jumped on them and it seemed like they just gave up." The Nuggets shot 10-of-23 in the first quarter but 16-of-58 thereafter and finished at 32 percent. The Pistons led by as many as 38 in the fourth quarter.
