Game Story

PHOENIX (Ticker) -- The San Antonio Spurs are anticipating Tim Duncan's return to the lineup, but they'll take this kind of production from Rasho Nesterovic every night. Nesterovic continued to play well in Duncan's absence, collecting 22 points and 13 rebounds, as the Spurs rolled to a 107-86 rout of the Phoenix Suns. San Antonio improved to 4-1 since Duncan suffered a left thigh contusion on February 26 at Dallas. Nesterovic, who was averaging 8.6 points and 7.8 rebounds, has been instrumental in the Spurs' success without the two-time NBA MVP. "Everybody gets to score, but that's part of the game," Nesterovic said. "You don't have to score to play good and help your team. There's a lot of ways to help your team win. I was relaxed and that had a lot to do with the rest of those guys because we brought a lot of focus that just carried over from last night." In the five games without Duncan, Nesterovic is averaging 17 points and 12.8 rebounds. The 7-footer made 11-of-14 shots in this one and is shooting 59 percent (42-of-71) in Duncan's absence. "Rasho has been great for us during Timmy's absence," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "He really has been a key for us. R asho has been solid the entire year. He has had some bad games like everyone, but he has progressed and improved since day one." "When David Robinson retired, everybody wanted Rasho to come in and be David, which is kind of silly, but that is how fans are. They don't really understand the nuances of what is going on." In winning for the 12th time in 15 games, the Spurs got a productive night from point guard Tony Parker, who scored 17 points and fueled a 16-6 run that built a 74-52 late in the third quarter. Led by Nesterovic, San Antonio consistently outplayed and outhustled the Suns, who had not played since Wednesday. Nesterovic had 14 points on 7-of-8 shooting in the first half, helping the Spurs to a 56-41 lead. He fell short of season highs in points and rebounds but led the Spurs in scoring for the second time this season. "Tim Duncan has been holding our show down," Spurs forward Malik Rose said. "Rasho has really stepped up when needed him. He is fitting in very well and finding his niche, and now that Timmy is out, we need him to step up." Duncan made the trip to Phoenix and watched his teammates shoot 50 percent (42-of-84) and lead by as many as 29 points They moved within 2 1/2 games of first-place Minnesota in the Midwest Division. Amare Stoudemire scored 23 points to lead the Suns, who lost for the second time in five games. He also did not hide his feelings after leading the team in scoring for the 11th consecutive contest. "This was just a poor effort," Stoudemire said. "(It was) one disappointing thing after another," Phoenix coach Mike D'Antoni added. "It's the first time in a long time and surely, we aren't happy. We have gone three of four with beating New Jersey, but it's hard to explain because our practices are very good and (it was) somehow zero effort."
